winning trainer Richard Ford said: "It is quite a bizarre set of circumstances, but surely it didn't affect the result.

"The stewards are guided by the rules. As I understand it the fence was bypassed because of low sun and a chequered flag should have been raised.

"The flagman actually waved a yellow flag - which means stop the race - by mistake, but because of the low sun the jockeys couldn't really tell which flag he was waving anyway.

"He waved the correct flag on the second circuit but they all carried on and the result was in no way affected.

"They've run three and a half miles in heavy ground so it's not as if these horses run tomorrow and mine is a quirky devil so I was delighted he won.

"I'm disappointed for his owner because it is the not the fault of the jockeys. As I understand it all the jockeys are getting 10-day bans, too.

"It seems very harsh but those are the rules, and the stewards on track, Robert Earnshaw and Alan Dempsey, are bound by them.

in a race with 6 conditionals and mcalister, I'm afraid bans for them was 1.01
if the same race was mccoy, walsh, geraghty, johnson, fehily, maguire, twiston-davies I guarantee that they would have got off without any punishment
Report Steamship November 25, 2014 4:51 PM GMT
It seems that as long as those above do not take responsibility in this sport then it's ok.
Recently we have had wrong distance for races, Badger Beer entry fiasco, heaven knows how many going descriptions that are wrong and now this.

Jockeys will surely appeal and get the bans turned over.
As for the owner and trainer they lose out when it had nothing to do with them.
Will the winner go up in the weights?

Really is time for centralised stewarding and a change of rules.

Which means this well thought out method of communicating with jockeys is somewhat flawed,a blind jockey on a galloping horse indeed.

I propose the much maligned whistle is employed,...

One blast for ''make it LOOK like you're trying''.

Two blasts for ''bypass next fence''.

Three blasts for ''slow down,the one the stewards are on is out the back''

And four blasts for ''jump ship! race void!''

As they say in football ''play to the whistle''.

I'm assuming jockeys can count to four.

All Nations will be in awe of how far we have advanced.

Not a bad idea but, if the jockeys cant see because of low sun then the race should be voided anyway. If the ctiteria for the race is 3m3f chase and 24 fences to jump, then that is what it is. There should be no taking fences out as the race doesn't reach the criteria anymore and is therefor void. Let us see if the useless racecourses try and resolve the problem so this kind of thing never happens again, I mean, how difficult can it be? A low sun should be in the same place every time and the horse's and jockey's safety is paramount.
Report parispike November 25, 2014 6:53 PM GMT
FPP a poor effort on my part; this is not a FPP situation actually. This is a void race; I believe Badblokes the only "big" bookmaker not paying out on the winner I believe.

Report the dealer November 25, 2014 7:15 PM GMT
but really think about it, horse loses the weight cloth and runs most of the race with 10lbs less in the saddle and wins, you would expect to get paid because they are FPP. horse takes the wrong course runs a furlong less than the rest, wins, would you expect to get paid.

in fairness doesnt happen often but has happened and none of the FPP bookmakers paid and why would they
Report marquemiwerdz November 25, 2014 7:20 PM GMT
In hindsight, surely if I bet the winner and the stewards enquiry was anounced then I'd just go to the counter and pick up. They cant argue with you at the time as they pay 1stpp. The enquiry went on for about 35 mins so surely some people have been paid out. I seen other people picking up on other races before the result of a stewards enquiry was announced.
Report the dealer November 25, 2014 7:25 PM GMT
no doubt loads will have been paid out before the result was official but my point is, that isnt their rule on FPP it doesnt cover all scenarios

A bit boring but if someone has 5 mins spare to read these rules regarding the total distances market from Joke orrals I'd appreciate their interpretation re Sedgefield today (bold bit being the key)

23.11 Aggregate Winning Distance Betting

23.11.1 The following rules apply to this market:
•bets are placed on the aggregate of the winning distances from one race meeting;
•if the winning distance is under one length the following numerical values will apply:

•Nose = 0.05
•Short-Head = 0.1
•Head = 0.2
•Quarter of a length = 0.25
•Neck = 0.3
•Half a length = 0.5
•Three quarters of a length = 0.75

•the maximum distance for any one race is 12 lengths for a flat race and 30 lengths for a National Hunt race, which includes National Hunt flat races;
•in the event of a walkover the following distances will apply: ◦12 lengths for National Hunt races, including National Hunt flat races;
◦5 lengths for flat races.

•in the event of only one horse finishing in a race then the following distances will apply: ◦30 lengths for a National Hunt race, including National Hunt flat races;
◦12 lengths for a flat race.

•all distance bets will be settled on the original distance recorded by the winner who was first past the post. However, if a horse has taken the wrong course it will be ignored for distance betting and the aggregate winning distance will then be calculated between the first two runners past the post who have taken the correct course;
•Bets will be declared void if all the races on that card are not completed. However, all bets will stand so long as the aggregate distance at the time of the last completed race is already "over".

I am in conversation at the moment arguing that my bets should be voided in this market.  They say no.
Report the dealer November 25, 2014 9:10 PM GMT
must be void surely according to that rule
Report billy onions November 25, 2014 9:14 PM GMT
That's how I read it.  My bets would have lost if result had stood by the way but that's not the point.

What makes it stranger is they have settled that race as '6 lengths'.   Where on earth does it say that in the rules?
Report the dealer November 25, 2014 9:19 PM GMT
only thing i can think, is that it was impossible to be overs regardless of that result but the rule doesnt read that way to me. presuming you bet overs
Report billy onions November 25, 2014 9:43 PM GMT
2 bets, 34 to 52 and over 52.  Miles away!!

It was only 13.5 with the 6 'legal races'.

The last line reads to me that if after the last race the distances made up to over 52 without the void race then all bets stand, otherwise all void
Report parispike November 25, 2014 10:21 PM GMT
Although not clear I'd assume the reference to "over" means the bet isn't voided unless the aggregate already totals more than the quoted "over" figure - I've highlighted "already" because the only meaning of it must be that the over figure has been reached by the time the voided race is run.

As the voided race was relatively early in the card I'd assume that the "over" distance had not been reached in which case it's a clear void bet.

Ask them what else the term means if they continue to dispute,

HTH
Report parispike November 25, 2014 10:26 PM GMT
Further thoughts

Bets will be declared void if all the races on that card are not completed.

That's the starting point,

The exception is

However, all bets will stand so long as the aggregate distance at the time of the last completed race is already "over"

Last completed race must refer to the last completed race before the voided one otherwise it makes no sense. Essentially it's there to prevent inequity when the bet has already won or lost prior to the voided race.

Seems pretty clear
Report the dealer November 25, 2014 11:02 PM GMT
f) If a meeting has 3 or more races abandoned or declared
void, then all bets will be void unless a winning market has
already been established, in which case bets will stand.
When only 1 or 2 races are abandoned or declared void,
then bets will be settled with a default distance used for
each abandoned or void race: 2 lengths for a flat race
and 10 lengths for a national hunt race.
