surely you would only link with someone who has an equal or superior pitch to yourself otherwise it would be to your detriment? but whats the positive?
you take approx twice the number of bets between you but your profits are split 50/50 (i assume) so you're no worse or better off.
is it simply that you hope to lay a more even spread of runners and not end up with a lop sided book?

As a regular racegoer it would seem to me that more than one pitch saves on expenses and makes it easier to make a book? I could be wrong.
Obvious onerheads.
However linking up they don't have to go the same prices.
Here's what happened to me recently.
Two linked up & I'm stood between them.The one in the better pitch said to the one in the poorer pitch,you go full whack so it will fluck him up(meaning me)& I'll get them in shorter to make our book.
I wasn't aware of what was happening at the time as I just do my one thing & ignore everyone else.However after the last race one of the lads standing in the line in front turned round to the one in the poorer pitch & said you may as well have stopped at home & laid them on the machine as all you did was go the exchange price all day.It was at this point that the one in the poorer pitch said to the bloke in the line in front that he'd only done as he was told by the book in the better pitch knowing him in the better pitch would get them in shorter & try to fluke me up.The reason for this was they wanted to stand together but I claimed the second pitch thus pushing the one with the poorer pitch along one.Needless to say at the next meeting the bloke from the line in front stepped back a line & flucked the pair of them up.

That sounds like a horrible thing to do, most on-course bookies are nice chaps from my experience although there are a few exceptions.
And from a business point of view utterly pointless to go top price everything. Unless it scared you away which sounds unlikely.
this is an easy one to answer and with nigh on 30yrs experience oncourse I can give you an honest reply.GREED !

Here's a couple of examples,Tatts Thirsk,the best three pitches in the ring are the last two out on the back line folllowed by last man out on the second.

Thanks allpoints for the explanation, I know some rings reasonably well and noticed bookies tend to go different places depending how busy it is. I assume with your many years of experience that you should have an edge over the new books regarding where to pitch up and what days just are not worth going to.

Don't worry the new blood in the rings sharp realise where the best pitches are.We have one bloke up the north goes round with his clip board writing down where everones stood.Obviously if the same bloke stands in the same pitch regularly then he probably thinks it's a good pitch.As for working the poorer meetings I'd rather take the dogs for a walk than waste my time watching nags run round a field.Very rarely do I bother going out midweek,the only time I'll work midweek is if the son wants to go.I have a decent pick at Thirsk (Tatts)but I'm better off going to points than I am going to those early season Saturdays.Very rarely do I attend those Saurdays.Derby day I don't bother going down to Epsom,I just go to Newcastle with just a fraction of the expenses & probably take as much.
Back to knowing the rings.This year Ladies day I could probably have stood in the first three (front line)in Tatts however I stood no 9 on the second line in the old silver ring.I probably took twice as many bets as those who stood on the front line,however my take per slip may not have been as high but believe me it wouldn't have been far behind.

With regards to expenses, what are you saving by linking?
You both must still pay the same amount to the race course for standing there?

From what I gather, the saving would be in fuel and staff. E.g. If someone links to you they could get a free lift with you and have only one member of staff on the second pitch. Seems logical to me although not sure I would be happy personally in someone else in control of my money!
Linking, two reason.. one, greed , two you turnover more without much risk .
you may turnover more but youre sharing the profit so surly neither a positive or negative. are you saying youre book is less likely to be lopsided if you link?
