A warning that the pics in the article are not for the squeamish, taken at Doncaster on 13th August after the horse broke its leg.

http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/shocking-picture-shows-racehorse-champion-4290791

The Mirror on Saturday 20th August will also have a feature on 'The Great Horse Racing Debate'.

I don't like seeing that and think its horrible but... with all the things going on in the world, what with people being decapitated they've decided its a good time to try and belittle a sport?, I find it pathetic that this will get more media attention than the poor cow who had her head chopped off a month back by a total psycho, all because they were too scared of covering it in case they got branded "racist". I've totally given up with our dirty country.

The 'kindest' solution was to put the horse to 'sleep'. Have they suggested a 'kinder' / quicker way?

How do they think they do it in abattoirs, or would they rather not publish photos of that, cuz it may put their readers off their cereal?

What absolute c*nts.

The picture is not Wigmore Hall so they are using his name and showing another horse. Morning line will be talking about it tomorrow.

The Mirror are utter ****s for publishing this, but it is Wigmore Hall. His hind legs were bandaged, hence the confusion.

There was one at Musselburgh some years ago where the vets sawed a horses leg of after it had been put down.
Despite the screens race goers in the Queens stand could  look down at the amputation.

Totally agree.

All that goes on every day across the land with crulty to animals yet they print this???

Stable lads up and down the country love and pamper there racehorses, they live better than a lot humans.

Yes its a tragic end to a glorious life on the track when it happens, but its quick and its humane.

They've even made a poor attempt at connecting Frankie Dettori to the horse by having a picture of him at Donny and apparently riding the horse in a race when it's quite clearly Jamie Spencer. Frankie has never even ridden the horse in a race.

There is no great horse racing debate - Sack the editor.

Aside from the pictures, which are undoubtedly depressing (poor old lad), it is equally depressing that those involved in this, i.e. vet, racecourse workers, etc have gifted the animal aiders such a photographic opportunity in the first place? Death is a part of life that most of us emotionally mature people can live with however the fringes have trouble dealing with this so why make it easy for them? I no more want to see a horse's death played out in pictures any more than anyone so don't make it easy for them to use such an opportunity to blast the sport as a whole. I feel for the horse's connections who are seeing the death of their beloved horse being used in such a way by a fringe element.

Racing treats horses as tools - all this stuff about how much trainer/owner X loves his horses is nauseating.

What happens to all the useless yearlings every year?

Unfortunately there is a world in which the morally challenged serve up "stories" to the intellectually challenged and from time to time that world collides with ours.

Tomorrow / today's chip paper, move on.  Note to BHA Vets though - edict to use fatal injection is probably they best way to go on course.  The mongs can't deal with the 'cleanest' way.

A very poor response from Dave Yates in his piece about it. Basically just saying racing earns the treasury money to pay for schools etc. That's a different subject.  The simple fact is a horse with such an injury has to be put down as soon as possible.

I agree Howellsy - surely Yates needs to consider his position at the paper after this.

Although, of course, the biggest hypocrites in the whole thing are the editor and proprietors of the paper. I think we can safely say that they'll continue to accept advertising revenue from bookmakers, and have the back page plastered in coverage when the Festival and National roll around in the spring.

The racing and betting media don't care about integrity, or even the truth, in any way, imo - it's all about the Bisto...

It's a shame people aren't educated as to why these courses of action are deemed necessary, Maybe Mirror readers/ Animal Aid activists should read this for some balance to their knee jerk reactions.
It's also sad that all connected with the horse have now had all good memories tarnished as now their last image of the horse is being shown moments from death :(

Think I agree , racing doesn't need this does it. Why are we still shooting horses on the course ? Is it a cost thing , the most efficient way , can't be surely? Any vets?

When: 20 Sep 14 12:28
Hushwing what would you do for a horse on the course, that has unfortunately broke it's back? Answer = you do the only thing possible. You quickly end its suffering by using a gun.

nothing worse than seeing any animal in pain , they have to do it but its very sad all the same .
rem seeing dessert orchid 1st time it ran came down ,blankets and screens came over never moved !
looked ominous for the stunning grey , but then suddenly it sprang up, it was just very badly winded .
alas it turned into a real champion , one of the lucky ones !
