.....Usually I would have perused today’s offerings yesterday tea time, as well as very early this morning, however due to getting the chance of going racing yesterday have been unable to go through a few handicaps until this morning. It could have actually counted in my favour, with the couple of horses I personally like the chances of somewhat friendless in the market and have both drifted, Imo there is now value to be had in their respective prices.
The Old Borough Cup looks a smashing renewal, with plenty going to post boasting strong claims to the prize. As a rule anything that Luca Cumani’s send to Haydock for a handicap has to be respected, with plenty of punters latching on to this not so secret fact which has help force Havana Cooler in to the clear market leader. However his short single figured price in such a competitive heat does not make him appealing to me as a betting proposition, despite the masses of positives attached to his chance. I’m taking him on with a horse that is approximately twice his price, and at his price of 10-1 I believe Quest for More has a bigger run him than those odds would indicate.
Roger Charlton is a trainer that is highly adept at bringing on handicappers, and usually is the case with plenty they are given the required time to mature into decent horses, more often than not it’s during their 4 / 5yrold career when the yard reap the benefit from this patient approach. Quest For More isn’t that typical of this category, but there is no doubt about it he has yet to hit the ceiling of his ability, and holds the profile of a steadily improving type synonymous to the yard. He was Imo unlucky not to have won on his seasonal reappearance back in April at Windsor, the searching gallop set by Jupiter Storm as a result of being taken on by Australia Day set it up for a finisher, with Quest For More looking set to take advantage of this furious pace only to have the rail run closed on him just as James Doyle was asking him to win his race. I’m not sure if he picked up an injury as a result of the barging but was not seen again for 3 months, but did resurface to win off his unchanged mark of 80.
He won the race making harder work of it than necessary, with connections wasting no time in putting a set of blinkers on in light of him idling in the closing stages of that particular contest. Nto sporting the new headgear was made 3rd favoueite behind a couple of impeccably bred improving 3yrold colts, and despite his efforts had to give best to Warrior Of Light, with daylight back to the remainder. His latest effort at York looked another step forward on the progression ladder and only finding Edge Of Sanity too good in an extremely competitive class 2 over York’s 2 mile’s, undoubtedly looking to pay in those closing stages for pulling James Doyle’s arms out for the half mile of the contest. I’m sure he will have to be better than an 88 horse to win today, but further progress is definitely on the cards, and has a nice low draw to be jumped out in a prominent position, with the pace to the race likely to be moving up and over from the high numbered stalls.
15 minutes later in the same colours Battersea looks to contest another decent pot for HRH Sultan Ahmad Shah, trained this time by Roger Varian. When making his handicap debut off 76 at Newmarket over 13F came up against Maid In Rio, who has got to be one of the most improved horses this season. That was in late June and he made the Mark Johnston inmate fight all the way to the line for the victory, pulling well clear of the remainder showing a very willing attitude in the process. His latest start was over today’s C/D mid July in a fairly hot 3yrold contest, and having much more use of his stamina maid by laying up handy won with authority, this time easily accounting for Maid In Rio along with several other unexposed types. Today he races off 90, but the way he has been campaigned suggests he could be a very nice horse, with his current rating probably way short of the type of horse he is presently. His draw is wider than ideal, this may have played a small part in why he’s now drifted to around 8-1, but hopefully Graham Lee can get him up just behind the pace in a nice rhythm, with early exchanges to this contest guaranteed to be just as crucial as the conclusion.
Once again I’ve backed them both E.W. plus the double, GL if you get involved.

I looked at this race by way of trainers that have won a 14f "B" hcp at track and then all tracks. Luca Cumani won hands down but today Havava Cooler has something missing from the other winners. The one I picked was Aramist by that method. I have also included Quest For More in my bets though.
