Why are these people paying out on a void race. Surely there has to be a ruling on this as far as bookmakers are concerned. I.e all pay out ,or none do,otherwise if you'd backed the ' winner ' with one who wasn't paying out , you' d have every right to kick off - wouldn't you ? And what would the outcome be if you challenged it with betting regulations board ?

Have you never heard of competition. Brownie points on a Bank Holiday worth as much as a full page ad in the Racing Post. I assume they have refunded everyone who backed the losers.

Race 3 - 3:10pm THE totepool SUPPORTING THE SPORT YOU LOVE HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 2) The Stewards held an enquiry under Rule (B)11.6 into the start of this race. They interviewed Sam James, the rider of BONDESIRE, Paul Hanagan, the rider of SILVANUS (IRE), James Doyle, the rider of HUMIDOR (IRE), Ryan Moore, the rider of LONG AWAITED (IRE), David Probert, the rider of SWISS CROSS, Kieran O’Neill, the rider of TAURUS TWINS, Daniel Muscutt, the rider of COME ON DAVE (IRE), Martin Lane, the rider of LADY GIBRALTAR, and the Starter. The evidence was that TAURUS TWINS anticipated the start, broke open the gates of its stall and began in advance of the other runners. The Starter immediately called a false start and waved his flag to this effect. The Advance Flag Operator initially took several steps to the right before waving the recall flag. The riders explained that having moved to the side the Advance Flat Operator was out of their line of sight, particularly given the poor visibility due to heavy rain and because of this continued on in the race. Being satisfied that a false start had been declared in that no runner had returned to the Starter after the recall flag had been raised the Stewards declared the race void. At a subsequent enquiry into the start, evidence was also taken from the Advance Flag Operator who confirmed he had taken several steps to the right prior to waving the recall flag and also that he did not blow the whistle as required. As the operating procedures were not followed by the Advance Flat Operator the Stewards decided that no action would be taken against the riders and, further, that a report be forwarded to the British Horseracing Authority.

A ludicrous decision to call a false start in the first place, there would be at least 60 or 70 a week based on that, nothing wrong with a horse getting a fast start. Doubt he will but the starter should be punished for that.

I seem to recall that Santa Anita (for one in the US) have some sort of siren they can use in such cases.
Tend to agree though - it's such a rare occurrence, installing systems at every racecourse here seems a bit like overkill.

According to the Racing Post only Hanagan admitted seeing the flag. Did the others have their eyes shut?
So effectively they had the option of blaming a couple of faceless bods or giving the likes of Moore, Hanagan and Doyle a ten-day ban that would see them missing the St Leger meeting and other big races.
Decision bottled as per usual. It seems the jockeys cannot be blamed for anything these days.

If Hanagan had pulled up (at any point before the winning post I believe) he'd have got the w/o and the pot - he's therefore clearly a bit dim (or a v poor jock if he can't pull up in half a mile!).

Why not pay the prize money for the race, surely Epsom is not strapped for the cash and it hurts no one. I can understand the betting side because of winners and losers (bets) being voided but the horses, trainers, jockeys and stable staff have all done their job for nowt.

George Baker also (deliberately) missing the point in today's Post. If he wants compensation he should asking Ryan Moore and co.
This isn't about whether it was correct false start or not. That is not for the jockeys to decide. For whatever reason the jockeys did not follow the rules. Why bother with rules at all if they are just going to be ignored?
