Was going for the very same route through. Probably would have won had Sole Power not been in the race.

Only in horse racing is a win greeted with so much gloom.
Report themover August 22, 2014 3:50 PM BST
element of both. If the gap didn't come would have taken heavy criticism, but it did so you have to say great ride as the horse has to be ridden that way.
Report jamesdean August 22, 2014 3:51 PM BST
Smullen's was miles better. Hughes had gap after gap but chose the wrong one nearly every time. Horse had about a stone in hand and should have won in much less of a scare. Horse was the star on this occasion

gap after gapCrazy don't think so,the gap up the rail wasn't there because late on a bunch of horses converged and shut that gap, horse has to be held up and they are all racing on the same part of the track...would have gone up the rail..got shut out...switched and finds another gap and wins...simple, no drama there.

Top ride by Hughes. He explained that the first gap that appeared the horse dropped the bit. So he covered him up again, and then put him in between the two horses waiting for the gap - that came.
The horse's cruising pace is incredible, as is his turn of foot. Right jockey on the right horse. Job done. End of.

Wesdag is correct.
Report elise August 22, 2014 4:04 PM BST
that turn of foot in the last half furlong is hugely impressive
Report dj876 August 22, 2014 4:04 PM BST
The pipe had stated beforehand that Hughes was getting the ride because of his belief in Sole Power's turn of foot, the ride has to be taken in context.
Report duffy August 22, 2014 4:05 PM BST
The time for people to complain would when the jock sees the gap shut and decides to sit there and suffer rather than (doing what hughes did) and react instantly and find another way through.
Report jamesdean August 22, 2014 4:06 PM BST
He did not have to wait so many times though. Hold up horse or not, the win should have been more comfortable imo

It's understandable when people talk about the fine line between a GREAT ride and a shocker but we all know what we're gonna get with Sole Power and his reliance on gaps in big fields.

If he would've lost it has to be taken on the chin as one of those unfortunate things but thankfully, that was a race to savour and once my Shea Shea was screwed, I was roaring home Hughes...that's made my day even without a bean on one of my favourite horses Happy

Hughes had to make quick decisions given the way the race panned out for sole Power.  I can see why he covered him up again when the horses split and it was always going to be touch and go if he was going to get te gaps so late on but a cool head and no panicking ensured he didn' t throw the race way and horse was brilliant when he got his run.  How anybody can criticize Hughes for that ride is beyond me.
Report sageform August 22, 2014 4:19 PM BST
It is hard to explain to some punters that just because there is a gap available 2 furlongs down, the jockey should take it. As Hughes explained, if he had done so he would not have won.
Report jamesdean August 22, 2014 4:23 PM BST
I'm sure he would have still won, not just won but with some in hand. Johnny Murtagh has won on the horse more than once without producing the horse on the line. I suppose it must be hard for some to realise every winning ride isn't necessarily a good one. With how much the horse had in hand over the field and the winning distance, Hughes got lucky this time imo
Report Outpost August 22, 2014 4:34 PM BST
hughes ride on sole power today was one of the best rides ever.

Stunning ride from Richard Hughes. Not many jockeys would have delivered Sole Power to win by a half length after being denied a clear run.

Must rank as one of the rides of the season.

how was that a good ride? good grief, best horse in the field by miles and hughes nearly got it beat
Report Mellottie August 22, 2014 10:17 PM BST
Dear rmccarthy

It’s difficult having intelligent discussions with people like you who are so obviously clueless about racing and jockeyship.

If you had half a brain you would hang your head in shame.

Anyway, unlike you, Edward Lynham knows a thing or two about racing and this is what he said today:

“I think those are the rides Richard likes,” Edward Lynam, Sole Power’s trainer, said. “He enjoys it more than we do but he was excellent on him, full credit to him.

“He’s a first-class jockey and it was a first-class ride. I always thought he was going to get there.

“He’s a super horse, a horse of a lifetime, and that’s just the way he does it. He was about 97 points lighter [shorter in the betting] than he was four years ago.”

Why not try engaging brain before opening gob?
Report roadrunner46 August 22, 2014 10:29 PM BST
he had the confidence of knowing he was on a specialist sprinter with a devastating turn of foot, was a very good ride, not the greatest ride of the season IMO.

Report ima_mazed66 August 23, 2014 1:40 AM BST
It's all well and good being on a horse with a turn of foot but you also have to have luck in running or place your horse in such a position that you ensure you get a run (and the draw doesn't always help with that) and when he had the Abdullah job he got boxed in, in what effectively turned into a 4 horse race at Epsom on Home Affairs for Stoute and was flying once having to take a pull and go around the other runners to get a run but was still narrowly beaten and Stoute was none too pleased.

Tracked leading pair, going strongly but trapped on inner over 2f out until last 100yds, ran on well near finish, no chance.

He allowed his horse to run down the camber but then got trapped when no gaps came and also had to sit and suffer whilst others went up his outer and held him in, yet when another jockey was narrowly beaten on one at Epsom a few weeks back when racing higher up the camber to prevent his horse rolling towards the rail behind others, the view form some posters on here was that he should have let it drift to the rail and then pull out and go around runners late on.

Damned if they do and damned if they don't and Hughes would have been crucified on Sole Power if he had not managed to get up in time.
Report rmccarthy16 August 23, 2014 2:03 AM BST
mellotie, is that you richard?

It's hard to have an intelligent discussion with anyone when the opening statement is full of attacks.

He got very lucky, the horse isn't tricky at all so it's not as if he had to play it late purposely to make it win.

The truth is Hughes was all over the track and very fortunately got the breaks and won by a short distance when if he had just held his position and kept it simple would have won by half the track.

I'm getting sick and tired with the constant hughes love in. The amount of times on c4 or RUK or on here about how brilliant he is is astounding. Hughes was in the best horse by far and got lucky, end of story.

I utterly despair at times. A 7lb apprentice would have won on Sole Power if the horse had a clear run (3+ lengths if the jockey wanted). The fact that the horse did win under Hughes has absolutely nothing to do with the jockey's ability. The fact is that the "gap opened in time" (how many time have you heard that) and the horse got through and strolled home. If the gap had not opened it would have just been put down as "unlucky but that's racing". Ride of the season? Get real.
