told by manager that only my handwriting has been sent round all shops (£20 on a 12/1 winner was just too much for them apparently) in area but i managed to take a photo of his screen and it had my cctv image on it. I know a casino can have your image legally as its a private club but a bookmakers is a public place. I'm toying with going to a solicitor and raising an action under data protection. Local press are interested too. Anyone had similar?
They do, Im a code red customer every time I place (try to) they ring through and tell the guy on the risk desk where Im stood. Now I give them my slip and go for a pizz, its not as if Im having fortunes on. Got a knock back on a £10 ew double last bet I placed (or tried to). They really are poor, worst of it is the staff know they are as well.

Hills were taken to court over a similar matter and had to settle for not a small amount, try and get the manager to hand you a copy of any photo if you can and any accompanying documents that might have been sent round by the area manager will all help

Haven't you noticed,Britain is a surveillence society. We are being filmed and photographed everywhere we go,not to mention e-mails/phones etc.
Of course it's all for 'your safety and security'.
So don't worry your little heads about anything.Big Brother is watching over us all.

I've got a still photo of the email sent by the area manager that contains my image and standing by it is the manager, so proofwise it's fairly watertight. Solicitor will do it 'no win no fee' and reckons it could go somewhere under human rights legislation. Is it worth contacting coral to get their 'side' of things before continuing?

Interesting RR, as they have a shop rule which attempts to cover them for such. I'm sure they've got photos of me.

Since when has it been a crime to take a photo of someone?
Have you not heard of Yewtree? Oh, you mean adults in betting shops. It would be interesting if someone were to sue for libel, on the grounds that a blurred ex-cctv photo makes you look like an armed robber or some such.

You can't take an image of someone and then circulate it around a business as an attachment to an email stating. ' conditions' I.e don't take bets off this person ? That's a strict contravention of privacy laws.

I know casinos do it legally for card counters and as private premises they are entitled to do so, but the law regarding bookies is different I would have thought. Grouping me in with slow counters etc seems a bit extreme just for having the nerve to back a winner with them. I wonder if the BBC would be interested in this for their documentary planned for next spring? (featuring Coral)...i.e. if you're not in here to pump the fobt you can **** off

A bookmakers is not a public place and their solicitors would have made them aware if their use of cctv was actionable under the DPA.

CCTV is used on all of our premises. You agree that by entering onto these premises your image may be captured and used for training purposes or disclosed to third parties insofar as Coral has legitimate concerns about the security of the premises, (or items or cash on the premises), adherence by customers with these terms and conditions, and the safety of customers and staff using the premises.
from corals shop rules, should be on display in all shops as part of shop rules, should also have signs saying cctv in operation, the line aherence by customers with these t&cs refers to all the otehr rules which they can hide behind as reasons for taking/circulating pictures
you have a legal claim to see whatever they are holding and by law they must disclose within 40 days, although they may also legally charge you a tenner for the privilage

Eg. This is a man, he's entered the shop, he probably wants to place a bet. Be wary , he may win some money.
Which of the above reasons would apply to OP ? For training purposes.? Eg. This is a man, he's entered the shop, he probably wants to place a bet. Be wary , he may win some money.
I don't think they could hide behind the "training purposes" line, so they are basically calling you a criminal as they have concerns about security on the premises because of you. Go to the ICO website and get a template letter and send to Corals asking for everything they hold on you, including emails, internal emails, attachments, anything with your name on, anything that is about you but is referenced as another name/number/information about any images of yourself etc. Send a tenner with the letter and get it sent by recorded delivery. Worth a tenner just to have them running around getting all the data they have on you imo....
If they hold any information back they are breaking the law, so if you have proof that they hold something on you and don't send it fire a complaint into the ICO.

the question initially was about can they hold an image and the answer is yes providing they have signs & rules up on display for customers, visit the store and check that they are displaying the relevant signs
the question of what they can use that data for, in relation to managing their business, protecting their profit, customers, staff etc is another issue, but if they have rules on display then you're also challenging the legality of their t&cs and i'd imagine that's already been tested and their must be a precedent out there already

In many instances the public get the impression that the BIG company knows the law,and act correctly.Having taken big companies to court(nothing to do with betting),and won,I can safely say that it isn't correct assumption.

It's also worth keeping in mind that the standard of staff in the shops is patchy, to say the least.
The firms pay peanuts and provide virtually no training. Some staff are good as gold, but some are feeding dog food to the mentally ill. A lot of them simply cannot be trusted with photos and other confidential information.
In any event, how f***ed up has the bookmaking industry become when customers are treated like criminals for just trying to get a bet on at the best price?
You beat me to it, unbiased. It's also worth keeping in mind that the standard of staff in the shops is patchy, to say the least. The firms pay peanuts and provide virtually no training. Some staff are good as gold, but some are feeding dog food to th
