Very simple for me.
The horse must have a far greater chance than the odds available.

Knows how to put its head in front.Everyday you hear tales about how unlucky they were in running when in fact thay aren't unlucky, they are DOGS.Half the blooming things will not even go to the front never mind stopping when they do see daylight.

Has previously shown it can win/go close on the ground or surface would be my main decider.

Class of race is a factor too and having won at the course and distance are also obviously important but would you be put off by a non-CD winner that had been beaten in a photo the last time it ran there over the trip?

At one time I would also have said a recent run to prove its fitness but don't really think that is as much of an issue as in the past now.

just one simple thing I look for before placing cash on a horse. the name k. fallon must not appear near its name on the racecard!!!!!WinkWink

Must be racing off a winning mark. Weight stops even the greatest horses.

Or C.Catlin

Chris catlin has the the biggest fall from grace i can recall.

he was a AW specialist at one point, being widely respected
How that guy has lost interest and ability, so fast and so much is beyond me.

were is he now?

ETERNALOPTIMIST you have nailed it,the much maligned Van Der Wheil used to say about successful betting

Its all tied up with temperament and odds

He was absolutely 100% correct.
Report racingstar August 8, 2014 10:34 AM BST
Clearly, the ground and distance are of major importance but, they have already been taken into account by your odds assessment.
Report G Hall August 8, 2014 10:39 AM BST
The trainer takes a lot of these things into account ie course distance ground etc.

Report doantwin2easy August 8, 2014 1:34 PM BST
if you can't assess whether the horse goes on the ground, at the trip, or is on (or potentially on) a winning mark, then there is no way of knowing whether the horse has a greater chance than the available odds.

So these eggs must come before the chicken.

Report Barton Bank August 8, 2014 5:28 PM BST
For a maximum bet the horse needs to be progressive or well handicapped, preferably both.
Report Homer Simpson August 8, 2014 5:36 PM BST
Not to back odds on if it hasn't already won a race.

Not to back lightweights in handicaps, you are betting against the fastest horses on known form/ratings.

Not to back anything on Shergar Cup day, it is like a non competitive school sports day.

As regards the vast majority of punters, the one criterion they should always follow is to back the favourite.

They'll need to know an awful lot more than they do know to beat the returns they get from simply backing the favourite.
Report duncan idaho August 8, 2014 6:03 PM BST
pretty sure course & distance winner has a negative impact on ROI  ie backing all C&D winners returns a greater loss than backing all none C&D winners....not for a moment suggesting you'd back everyone or that you wouldnt apply other criteria aswell...just saying, that's all
Report Dr Crippen August 8, 2014 6:30 PM BST
I think what they mean when they say back a c and d winner is that they'll look at the horse and if it meets their other criteria they'll back it.

I don't think they mean back all c and d winners regardless.
