The De Beers Diamond stakes, the winning jockey got a Diamond necklace, the runner up got a Pearl necklace if she was lucky!
Franca Vittadini was the girl to follow. Won a couple of years running as i recall, won on a horse named Hard Day in 75, the same day her fathers colt Grundy won the KG@QE stakes, great days. Seem to recall a young Clare Balding having a few rides as well, don't recall her getting the Diamonds though!

But - There were some pitiful 'Lady' Riders in those days.

Just a handful were capable of riding something resembling a finish - and the rest were ,ostly passengers.

NON-Handicap race, too - meaning that only a handful of horses had any chance, aswell.

David Ashforth used to always write about his love of this race.

France Vittadini won it 4 times, bet she could hardly stand up straight with all that weight around her neck!
