Around 40 years ago around this time of year at a Uttoxeter evening meeting I was present when the very wily Earl Jones landed a major gamble with Civil List in a 2 mile hurdle; can anyone confirm the details for me?
Based on the info in the first edition of Chasers and Hurdlers (1975/76) I can tell you that they bought him for 1,450 gns from Noel Murless and he won on firm going at Cheltenham and Uttoxeter in April 1976 - made all and won unchallenged both times.
Given he'd already won at Cheltenham, it seems unlikely that he'd have been much of a price in a race at Uttoxeter, which was the lowest class of track back in it's pre-Stan Clarke days.

onlooker - there was some cross-posting there. The Herald had the winner's SP as 10-1, so the Tote returns looked very wonky. At 10-11, they looked a lot more sensible.
