Summing up the race in this week's Weekender said Bobsworth too short and put up Lord Windermere,The Giant Bolster and On His Own as good alternatives at the price !

Yeah - just posted similar message. Nick has taken some stick - particularly on here - over the years. Hopefully he'll get some plaudits for a great bit of tipping!

Mordin has a column in the (weekly) Irish Field, which is basically the same content as would have been on his website.

Does anybody actually buy the Weekender nowadays;  last time I took a look at the contents, it was barely a shadow of its former self in the 1990s

I buy the irish field every week mainly to read nicks 'time will tell' page. Due to him not updating his website anymore, his 'Time will Tell' section is the only thing I keep from every paper to re-read before the end of season races. I had 4 bets this week,  3 of them based on his analysis. £500 win Jezki @ BSP, £100 win Rainbow Peak @ BSP, £100 win Sew on Target and £200 win Lord Windemere @ BSP. For many years I have been v successful at the end of season meetings thanks to basing my bets on his articles throughout the season.  5 figure profit this year again for me!!! This also happened a few years ago when throughout the season he stated how Big Zeb was every bit as fast as the hot fav Master Minded in the champion chase and Weapons Amnesty was unstoppable in the RSA. I backed both as if defeat was out of the question and both hosed up!!

Used to buy it every week, but just not enough of interest in it now imo. I do quite like reading Mordin's articles though, often an interesting read even if not of practical use.

The winner found 28 lbs on official ratings with Bob's Worth and the Racing Post ratings had him 24lbs behind last year's winner.
In fact there was only one horse rated lower than the winner in today's race.

These collateral ratings are a farce. There are far too many glaring errors both ways.

Good for Mordin for not being led by the nose by ratings as so many others are.

in fairness, he's also been saying Sire de Grugy keeps posting slow times and is overrated, whereas form ratings said otherwise...and i thought he reckoned Felix Yonger was the second coming, no?

And a skeleton of what it was when it was the Handicap Book. I first bought it in 1953 when it cost a Tanner.
I learnt a lot from it and based two or thee methods on data from it. I stopped buying for some time but it is worth it for the detailed race results and comments and of course the thoughts of Fallon.
Alan Kings column is a disgrace, he just list his maybe runners without ever being confident of them. His recent big priced winners barely got a mention.
Much of the time there is a lot of after timing in Mordin's thoughts. This week was better as he was giving his considered opinions on the horses involved.
The Steeplechasing newsletter had some good thoughts on this weeks racing.

That's exactly right Duncan Idaho, naturally he doesn't get it spot on every time!! I remember at the previous Cheltenham festival that I won good money I put a large 5 figure bet on Tidal Bay on the back of Nicks analysis of the cleeve hurdle run were he stated that by his ratings Big Bucks was not capable of running as fast as Tidal Bay! Big Bucks skated in!!!! In fairness though Tidal Bay has since gone on to prove Nick right by showing what an exceptional racehorse he is! There's always an eliment of luck in racing and this year I was just fortunate, but i'll take that!!

Oldgit. Back in the 90s, The Weekender at least tried to inject  a fresh approach to racing journalism - especially with their Private Eye style gossip column which pointed in the direction of plenty winners of the future and, at the same time, provided a good read with its irreverent style

Nowadays, most columns are presented with retrospective comments relating to the form book or are statistically based.

As keen racing followers already know this sort of stuff anyway, they have little reason to buy a weekly publication. The Weekender badly needs investment where it's content is concerned in order to attract a profitable  customer base once again.

Don't reckon that's likely to happen, somehow!

'...................... on the back of Nicks analysis of the cleeve hurdle run were he stated that by his ratings Big Bucks was not capable of running as fast as Tidal Bay!
----------------

Irrespective of your claimed winnings bets ....

Are you absolutely sure that the words ..., "fast," and, "TIDAL BAY," - sit comfortably in the SAME sentence?

Worse still - adding in, "MORDINS 'SPEED' Ratings" Cry when talking about LONG Distance STEEPLECHASERS MUST be something of a MISNOMER.

Methinks that you have enjoyed something of a fortunate coincidence -
- rather than the product of a mathematical manifestation!

Pinhooker:
I wrote a farewell letter to Update some years ago and they actually published it.
I don't remember the Private Eye type column. When was that?
The Mordin article may persuade people to stay with it after its latest price increase.
A four page paper I used to buy was The Racehorse. It was bought by Raceform and incorporated into it but the features disappeared.
If it has gone downhill how about The Morning Line. It was reported that one Cheltenham one only had 132,000 viewers.

Go you boys remember the preceder to the WEEKENDER ? ....

THAT became the original WEEKENDER

Perhaps you are remembering Jeffrey Barnard's column from those days.

132,000 viewers.

How do they calculate that?
They could be a mile out.

There's no way they know how many TVs are tuned into the show.

Do they ask a set number of viewers what they are watching and extrapolate the figures?
That would be more like that.

I recall Mordin saying last week that Vautour (with 5 hurdle runs) did not have the experience to win the Supreme, whilst his stable companion, Wicklow Bay (2 hurdle runs) did.

Confused

he stated no horse in the world ever ran a furl faster than dancing brave did ,in the last fur off the derby , not even the super fast American 5 f sprinters , was he the fastest ever race horse , hard too say given the most shocking ride ever ,made up a staggering 22 lengths in the last fur , to almost catch sharastani , who was in any normal year an outstanding horse , still think it was the most competitive derby i ever seen, an outstanding crop off 3 year olds
dancing brave had a unique blend off speed and stamina , winning over 7f to 1m4f      rem young runaway could not catch him over a mile !

The bottom line is that Nick Mordin's column is just about the only  thing worth a second glance in the present day  version of the Weekender.

If the paper is to recapture any of it's former energy then some investment in quality journalism is sorely needed. A fresh format wouldn't come amiss either.

Is Straight From The Stable still in the paper? If so, it's been there since the Weekender was first published in the mid 1980s.
