how about this then, i was restricted with lad crooks so i closed the account about a year ago, anyway last month i received an email from them, saying bet £50 and get a free £50 bet.  So straight away i opened a new account and deposited £50, and wanted to have the £50 on a 2/1 chance only when i pressed bet button i got a reply saying to much stake so i went down 40 30 20 10,
and still no joy, so called them and was told as my account was restricted i could' t bet, but i could bet on their exchange site, so i said will i still get the free bet, to which the reply was no.
So i said then why send an email, believe it or not no answer.

how embarrassing that simonn claire comes on to RUK today to say how BOG is standard practice now with all bookmakers.
Report millhouse February 6, 2014 2:20 PM GMT
Just to clarify on some earlier comments - 'the Levy' is calculated on bookmaker profits, not turnover, so disenfranchising successful punters is actually 'good for racing'.

That the bookmakers have manoeuvred the racing industry and all the freeloaders who work in it into a deal where they all actively have an interest in increasing the bookmakers profitability (i.e. shafting us), is absolutely no accident whatsoever, obviously.

No surprise to hear it was the excellent Hislop and Mellish who actually had the balls to say something....
Report parispike February 6, 2014 2:29 PM GMT
The observation  'the Levy' is calculated on bookmaker profits, not turnover, so disenfranchising successful punters is actually 'good for racing'.is one of those phrases that is right and wrong at the same time.

Right in the short term because how can anything but bigger bookmaker profits that "benefit racing" be perceived as anything but good? but wrong oh so wrong in the grander scheme of things because the "product" (awful word) has to hold out the possibility of a punter, exercising skill and being prepared to put in the work, making a success of his/her betting.
Report Rider February 6, 2014 2:33 PM GMT

Report geordie1956 February 6, 2014 2:56 PM GMT
The content of the programme between the racing was exactly what should be expected of a specialised racing channel; lets hope the generally positive response will encourage similar open discussions which are relevant and pertinent - although I somehow doubt it

parispike makes a very good point that there has to be the possibility of punters sometimes winning otherwise they will transfer their affections (and money) elsewhere

Report millhouse February 6, 2014 3:10 PM GMT
Sorry, fat fingers - couldn't agree with you more, parispike, but that's not how the bookmaking industry want punters to see gambling.

What is happening currently, imo, is a studied and deliberate, (Racing Post sponsored) agenda to devolve the betting consumer's expectations of gambling from wanting to win, to expecting to lose, but having 'entertainment' while doing the losing.

This is entirely why heroic losers with a story to tell like Birch and Palmer are now this industry's poster boys, imo...

I'd bet pretty long odds on if i sent full evidence to back up my criticism of a bookmaker RUK would still not name and shame and as i said before we all know why

Any 'journalist' interviewing a bookmaker rep whose first question isn't 'how come most of the people watching can't actually take the prices you are here to tell us about' is not just complicit, but also corrupt, imo...
Report frog2 February 6, 2014 3:43 PM GMT
The problem with early liquidity is more down to assymetric information. A layer on here has no idea who he is laying against so cannot adjust his book to sharp money in the same way a bookie can. We also have to offer exceptional prices to beat the bookies after commission.

A separately settled (decTime - 30 mins before the race) at zero commission/premium charge could help build the product and give befair a USP.

The problem is Betfair might pull the offer at anytime reducing the incentive to layers to build systems for it.
Report Wesdag February 6, 2014 3:44 PM GMT
cheers TRD
Report millhouse February 6, 2014 3:46 PM GMT
As for betting early, it's the price trading parasites that Betfair need to deal with if they want liquidity.

Ask for a price on here that's the same as the bookmakers, and within seconds a trading parasite will be in front of it. This creates an arb, forces the bookmaker to cut his price, and so causes an industry wide price reduction, without anyone actually having a bet.

Because Betfair will do nothing to inhibit these money changers, who they have invited on to the site to scalp their own customers, the Betfair platform, at least early on, has become a betting site where it's suicidal to actually try to have a bet...
Report TRD.Racing February 6, 2014 3:52 PM GMT
frog A backer has no idea who he is backing against either.

This place should be about opinions, either you fancy something or you don't,every so often you will run into one,but that's just the nature of the game.

On here you either bet 10 mins before the off,or become a money buyer in the run

RUK's original business plan was based on zero advertising revenue from the slime.
The vast majority of us viewers don't want to see Williams, Clare, and the rest of the lying ********** given airtime, and I suspect that last nights discussion was a realization that most of us are pissed off with the situation.

Well done to RUK for approaching the subject, but we do need the slime grilling on their practices?
Report frog2 February 6, 2014 3:58 PM GMT
Bigger tick size for the separate early markets would get rid of the £2 problem. Its then possible you could a fair bit of money up at 106%/94% books in the morning creating a market for those blocked by the bookies.
Report millhouse February 6, 2014 4:02 PM GMT
Artie, as we've covered many, many times, you don't bet early, so it's not a problem facing you - but trust me, screaming your intentions to legions of parasite traders, waiting to bet only because you have, by putting up a bet on here to be matched, even at the same price as the bookmakers, will usually see that price disappear.

This obviously isn't the case in strong markets on Saturdays or for Festivals, etc...

Both ATR & RUK could be presented better.
Seems the bookies have more more control over RUK, at least ATR put up the current exchange odds alongside the S.Ps Bet the bookies hate that.

I think both channels highlight how difficult finding winners is as it must be obvious to all
how unsuccessful the supposed experts are.
Both channels are good for a laugh but hopefully taking them seriously is just a phase the novice gambler goes through before he learns to stand on his own two feet because it is him or her who will be picking up the tab.
