Pas Seul was a very very good horse owned by one of my Grandfathers business partners John Rogerson, shame he was around during Arkle and Mill House days

I think Mr Rogerson owned Buona Notte who was killed at Cheltenham, but he did own Salmon spray which won the Champ hurdle I think it was 1966, John was related to the Joels but I dont recall my grandfather mentioning that

It was his wife who was related to the Joels. H.J (Jim) was her uncle.
Pas Seul almost didn't exist. The owner of her dam was going to shoot her when the man he'd lent her to (so that his daughter could ride her in trials) died, and he had to take her back. Instead Bob Turnell took her, sent her to a stud, she was covered the next day, and Pas Seul was the result. |

I remember Arkle ?? getting blamed for Bouna Notte's death , people said he took on the front running BN and caused him to dive at the fence that killed him , bit harsh

Arkle wasn't running. It was The Great Yorkshire Chase BN was killed in. They met the once earlier that season in The Massey-Ferguson when BN was 2nd and Arkle 3rd ( carrying 12-10 ) BN should have won but Haine was to c0cky.

Here's a video of Pas Seul falling at the last in the 1959 Gold Cup, when probably about to win it.

He had been odds on in the Ante Post lists, but had drifted to 9/4. He was also convinced that Pas Seul was the best horse he trained. |

His win was a bit before my time but I remember him finishing 3rd in 1964 a long way behind Arkle and Mill House. He didn't run in 1963. I think he was injured.

Pas Seul was a surprise foal--it was believed his dam, Pas de Quatre, had not conceived with her cover to Erin's Pride, and she competed in hunter trials and point-to-points the year she was bred. At age 5, after a couple of unpromising races when he fell, Pas Seul won six successive times over fences and hurdles, despite some "horrifying mistakes." Entered in the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 1959, he was leading the race until the last fence, where he fell in the path of Linwell, who was making his run for home; the Irish Roddy Owen won that race. The following season Pas Seul started off poorly, losing all of his races prior to the Gold Cup, but won it in a spectacular run for home after the last fence, where his speed and staying power put him ahead of the game Lochroe. Through mistakes in his Cheltenham Gold Cup run in 1961, he came in second to the brilliantly-ridden Saffron Tartan; he did, however, win the Whitbread Gold Cup that year, giving 21 lb. to Nicolaus Silver, that year's Grand National winner. In 1962, coming off an infection, he was eased to fifth in the Cheltenham Gold Cup race, and later that season broke down, age 9, and was rested from racing for over a year. He was brought back in 1964, winning a race at Kempton, but placed a sad third to the new jumping stars Arkle and Mill House in that year's Cheltenham Gold Cup. He was half-brother to a previous Cheltenham Gold Cup winner, Gay Donald (1955 winner, by Gaylight). Their dam, by a son of Blandford, had a significant amount of staying blood in her female line, with Prunus, Teddy, William the Third, and Rabelais all within 3 generations. Pas Seul's grandsire, Fairfax, also got 1951 Grand National winner Nickel Coin.

blackbarn is the colour expert, but if my memory is correct his colours were black with sky blue hooped sleeves, I think?

I have a feeling Mrs John Rogerson was officially the owner of Salmon Spray at least. the colours sound as though they may be correct. I can just about visualise SS and BN being in dark colours,but I will only have seen them on black and white TV.

It looks like Mrs Rogerson's colours were (in b/w terms, from footage of Salmon Spray), dark with a light sash, and perhaps a hooped cap.
I think she also owned Athens Wood, and there is colour footage of him winning the Leger in '71. (Colours still look 'dark with a light cross-belt') I think Pas Seul ran in Mr Rogerson's colours - perhaps the same hues, but different pattern. |

Mr John Rogerson's colours were Dark Blue, with light blue hooped sleeves and cap. Mrs John Rogerson's were Navy Blue with a pink and green sash and hooped cap. |

Thanks blackbarn for confirming my sanity (on this thread at least lol) - I was very close. They had me baffled, but I managed to dig out an old black and white photo which I posted late, when you didn`t appear, which you have now confirmed.  Enjoy the holiday! |

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr John Rogerson when I worked in the showroom of Gunmakers, "Holland & Holland", 13, Bruton Street, London W1 in 1968/69 as a junior salesman.
He was a regular visitor, buying cartridges and having his matched pair of H&H 12 bore shotguns cleaned and stored for each season. I took an interest in him because he was the owner (with his wife) of some notable racehorses at the time, Pas Seul & Salmon Spray were 2 of his best. He was always considered a lucky owner. He had a problem with his throat and used a voice box to talk to you (sounded a bit like ET), but was always eager to relate how his horses were, trained by Bob Turnell. A very nice man with some very nice horses.     |
