Beautiful jumper, long seen a horse jump like that. Natural
Report ima_mazed66 January 11, 2014 1:30 PM GMT
It was and whilst not wanting to take anything away from the horse it was a poor ride/judgement from Jacob as you don't sit 4L off a horse that is winging every fence and landing running. At some stage you would have hoped he would have closed up to negate that advantage.
Report Tallywagger. January 11, 2014 1:31 PM GMT
The second is a good horse. Will be better suited to a big field where a few take one another on up front.
Report mange January 11, 2014 1:31 PM GMT
ima..........you could run the race 10 times & it still dont win
Report EVILROYSLADE January 11, 2014 1:37 PM GMT
The horse jumped wonderfully well. I do however think that Jacob never once tried harassing. Massive drift before the off on fav.
Report ima_mazed66 January 11, 2014 1:40 PM GMT
You may well be right mange but you still hope any jockey gives his mount the best possible chance and there certainly didn't seem to be 4L between them at the line, so Jacob has made up some ground and would have gone closer if not having sat off the fluently jumping leader.

Thought the Jockey didn't matter so much at this level ima?

Ima, are you pocket talking?

I see you are still struggling to grasp what I actually said starfish and coffee. rather than what you think I actually said.

Despite knowing I'm wasting my time here once again because it still won't sink in, what I actually said was there's little in it ability wise between jockeys at the top end. That doesn't mean they can't still make an error of judgement and I've even said when they get criticised on here when being called sh1t jockeys and whatnot that more often that not a poor ride will be due to a bad judgement call rather than a lack of ability.

Even top end jockeys can give a horse too much to do, set off too fast, poor positioning and a number of other errors that they don't repeat in every race. Jacob didn't lose any chance in that race because he didn't have the ability to do what it took to maybe win it, he lost it via the poor judgement of giving the leader too much rope and not taking action over that when he could see it was jumping like a stage.

I suspect the likes of McCoy, Geragthy and Walsh have also lost an odd race in the past too via a lack or judgement issue rather than an ability one.

Ahhh I see. Changing your story to suit yourself eh? Nothing like a bit of back tracking when the shoe is on the other foot huh? Brilliant....
Report EVILROYSLADE January 11, 2014 2:09 PM GMT
Jacob definitely did not ride a very smart race. He sat back and let JMG do as he pleased. Not what I call an intelligent ride. It was a case of just going through the motions.

D.jacob 1 /19  last 14 days says it all really gave the horse to much to do he could not ride my misses and she's a fine ride Happy

I think you will find starfish and coffee that it's you who has changed my story and therein lie where you are struggling to grasp what I have actually said. Has it ever occurred to you (no of course it hasn't as that's far too obvious) that I have the clear advantage over you of having seen every post that I make?

Maybe aberdonia as I did back Jacob but I also realise the better horse won and it jumped impressively so no complaints on that score but does the fact I backed the 2nd suddenly mean my point isn't a valid one? If you have backed a horse racing in 2nd and the leader is jumping well and getting away from the fences quickly at every jump, would you prefer your jockey to be sat off the leader or to close up on it?

My very point EVILROYSLADE so thank you and I would have still said as much if I'd backed the winner or not even had a bet.
Report laluche January 11, 2014 2:31 PM GMT
ima... in-race, I thought Jacob might have done what you are suggesting, but that might have been worse, getting into a jumping competition against a superior jumper. Not defending Jacob, as I've never liked him, but I don't think Jacob's tactics were that bad in this instance.

Surely the way to upset a horse in a rhythm is to get upsides? Black Thunder would stay all day so no fear of a burn out. Race riding is a major part of this game and Jacob was not awake IMO. Too many things going on in the world of DJ . Big Bucks and the snub spring to mind.
Report ima_mazed66 January 11, 2014 2:52 PM GMT
That's fair enough laluche as the game's all about opinion but if Jacob was to have any chance of winning he was going to have to pass the winner at some stage and you can actually do that without getting into a jumping competition if just say 1-2L off the leader instead of the 5-5L he gave him.

Is English your second language by any chance MOGAMBO because you clearly haven't understood what I have written here and I never at any stage said the 2nd would have won, I merely said it's chance of doing so would have been improved if given a better judged ride.

LOL....is it really too much to ask for people to read what's actually being said and have it sink in instead of just getting what they think is the gist of it and then getting it @rse about face?

Maybe... and I probably wasn't so clear in what I was saying, but if Jacob positions him a length off the leader  I think he loses a length at quite a few fences and then has to ride him up again. I don't think this is a good idea at a track like Warwick.
Report ima_mazed66 January 11, 2014 3:38 PM GMT
But do you not think the leader was gaining an advantage at every fence even when Jacob sat off him? I also think that he then had to use a lot of horse just to get back into a challenging position and the leader's fluent jumping put even more pressure on the second's by do that, so that by the time they had jumped the last Jacob had probably been scrubbing along for longer than was ideal and his horse couldn't maintain it despite cutting into the winner's lead a little.

really impressed with him at rasen, done everything right so far for a novice

interesting they were saying RSA or 4 miler, I wouldn't be in a rush with him and certainly wouldn't be going to the well too often and in the wrong races, pointing and firing all guns blazing like today

personally would like to see him have a fairly quiet novice campaign, there is a massive race in this lad

That was a top race today, Black Thunder was beaten fair and square by a very smart chaser. I backed the runner up but he was beaten by a horse taking lengths out of him and i regard Black Thunder as a very slick and promising chaser.

Agree with AG, both horses emerge with credit. Some on here seem to forget no matter what there has to be a winner and a runner up in each race....

Gotta be a first for you to have seen it GEORGE.B as I've criticised jockeys numerous times (including Fallon before anyone says it) but like I've said elsewhere, I have the advantage of having previously seen every one of my posts so it's others who wrongly assume I defend jockeys blindly.

I like to think though that I only do so when it's justified and it's more often than not a judgement call rather than an ability one that I'm criticising and not just resorting to "they are all sh1t and at it and couldn't ride the London Underground" and other such pocket-talking comments.

Oh and going by some of the comments in this thread, several others posts seem to agree with that criticism of Jacob's ride here.
