In the Cambridgeshire review in the Post on 5th September Ismail Mohammed says 'I'd say a shot at the Cambridgeshire is quite unlikely'. In todays post we read 'this race has always been the plan' .
I have no problem with a trainer not providing a quote but when he does surely we can expect something resembling the truth?

I recall a few years ago just before the Eclipse a French Trainer ( Pascal Bari I think ) was interviewed pre race about his horse's chances . "Travelled over here well,working well expecting a big run" blah blah blah all the usual stuff ... The horse ran a shocker ... Post race the trainer was asked what had gone wrong ... " Horse was dehydrated on the journey over here " ... not ONE word about this beforehand. I learnt a lesson that day and that is why Knot in Word is right. |

Ok I understand but shouldn't there be a penalty for deliberately misleading? Seems like it is bringing the game into disrepute as they say.

if I owned a horse I wouldn't want the trainer giving out honest info on its targets or likelihood of winning.

so therefore its down to the post to not print it,sometimes they re accurate other times total tosh or worst still lies,so the whole quoting system becomes pointless - that drives punters away as they think they re being stichted up - so the post shouldnt print/encourage/ help this process - damages punter confidence which leads to less punters,bookies need to win punters money fairly.

Lets not forget Richard Faheys pre-race declaration in the papers before Fonthill Road's Ayr Gold Cup success -"we dont know whats been up with him" then after he'd won "hes had back trouble and the vet has worked wonders on a spinal problem". You must only listen to trainers that are honest, avoid the rest (the majority)

ask an Irish trainer about his/hers chances and you will get words like, if, but, maybe, might etc, everything is coded because they think its their world and yet without the punter they're nothing, but the gambler is their fail safe, which keeps some of them super rich.

Seriously though, there is too much expectation on trainers to provide 'winners'. All a trainer can realistically tell you is if a horse is fit and well. Too many other factors out of his/her control

Never tell you this one will win because they're pre-programmed to keep the betting public in the dark as they think its their world yet without betting they're a bloody nobody.

There is no answer to this problem. I can understand journos wanting to ask the questions but also understand trainers/owners not wanting to tell everyone if they think one is going to win. I never listen to or read about any of em so I never feel misled, but I did miss a winner from Hugo Palmer today because of this.

I think if U know the time o day & mix in those circles you may get to know if a horse is fancied...........the trouble being if the trainer says that he thinks it might win & it blows out they dont look good......& If he tells a mug...........the mug will almost certainly return & say "I...............................

The trainers do the hard work day in, day out, so it's understandable that they want
to be rewarded for their efforts by getting a better SP, which would probably be smashed if they tell the betting public "this one is gonna win 10 lengths" I don't listen to any pre race interviews from trainers, in fact I'm suspicious, as soon as I see a trainer willingly being interviewed before a race (as oppose to being hijacked by Chapman). Same goes for jockeys. |

silvergreaser i lost respect for ruby when he came out on irish tv on the craig doyle shoe on rte and said ;i dont ride for the punter, as if the punter was piece of dirt, ruby walsh would be nothing without the punter and it totally disgusted me his attitude and disdain to the punter

Dodds is one of the worst there is...he blatantly puts punters away time after time....if you fancy one of his on form just back it....record his pre race interview so he doesn't put you off....watch the recording after the race.

silvergreaser the punter is put on the last chain of system in racing even though he should be at the front , treated like dirt, in any other sport this would not happen, few yrs ago down in gowran pk seamus heffernan after pulling the hot fav drumbeat for the so called angellic stable of aidan o brien, came back in and declared ' i dont ride for the punter ', this sums it all up silver greaser of the rotten rancid game we have

but the only reason any of them have a job mick is because idiots like us bet on the game, if we stopped betting on it in the morning the game would be dead in the water, but thats not going to happen ever, as long as people can gamble they will.
Horse trainers, jockeys, breeders and in certain circumstances owners all get rich off a human frailty when you think about it? |
