I saw the breakdown and in leg 3 there was 120'000 on number 5 and 80'000 on number 1, I'm guessing there appears 1.5 million more than usual in the pool.
Somebody somewhere has lost a lot of money, I wonder if there's something mentioned in the racing post tomorrow, I doubt it.
Report barstool September 28, 2013 10:06 PM BST

It is like putting £10k in the win pool. You are just buying some of your own money back.

SURELY - the RACING POST have to investigate this.

Quotes - from Fred - of ... "It is correct," - are insufficient.

I know that they are not obliged to name names - But some clues such as ... 'A far-eastern syndicate' - or 'large-staking Australian client' - MUST be forthcoming [b]in explanation.

They must know who .... After all - Nobody has walked in a Shop and plonked £1 and a half MILLION - in 'Readies' on the counter.
Report the.mad.dog.man September 29, 2013 12:19 PM BST

Report Giblet September 29, 2013 12:24 PM BST
there has to be an explanation onlooker because anyone staking 1.5m on a placepot surely has the brains to realise they will lose even if they had a 1.5m straight line Crazy
because the 28% baldy takes out will make sure of it.
Report TheAnorak September 29, 2013 12:38 PM BST
I'm betting this will turn out to be an error in transmission by one of the agents (like Betfair) that take bets on behalf of the Tote for a commission, and that the one and a half million only exists in hyperspace.

So it's either a software bug that has multiplied the real stake when sending the bet, or they've been hacked by someone that doesn't like Baldy.

Of course that would mean a rather large list of suspects .....
Report The Sawyer September 29, 2013 1:02 PM BST
TA

You are probably right in what has happened. Either that or it is an on course operator error (obviously not at Chester!). For example someone could have filled out a multiple entry (say 10,000 lines) and asked for a total stake of £150. The operator has keyed it as a unit stake of £150 and issued a ticket worth £1.5 million!!!!

You would expect there to be checks in place in either instance, but once the "rouge" money is in the pot and the first race is off, there is probably nothing they can do to the rolling figures throughout the afternoon.

Took the day off yesterday to go to the golf and missed this wtf?
Who and why does anyone put 1.4 million on a placepot.
I hope you get paid but I cant help but think something stinks and fred will come up with some excuse.
Needs to be transparency on this.
Report minardi September 29, 2013 3:05 PM BST
Was Fred playing a game in the same way he could be manipulating the win pools in running - so lets just says he has visibility of all placepot permutation he then covers the permutations that will pay much much more than the true odds - i.e those permutations that have been "missed"

It doesnt matter that he may need £1m to cover this as he gets the takeout back anyway.

There is no transparency whatsover as to where the money comes from - and in the case of win betting crucially when the money goes down. Obviously the placepot pool is declared up front but it would be interesting to note when the pool jumped to £1.5m
Report SqueezeFirmly September 29, 2013 4:37 PM BST
Just looked at the results, I generally only do one placepot a day, and went for Newmarket.

I don't study form, and I put it on as near as I can to the first race, after the morning markets have settled.

For the first 4 races:
I have the 1st, 3rd and 4th best on the BF screen in races of more than 7 runners
I have the 1st, 2nd and 3rd best on the BF screen in races of 7 runners or less.
And the favourite on the BF screen on its own in races 5 and 6.

81 line perm, and it would have given 4 winning lines.

Sums up my luck that does. Sad

What does the story say ?
Report Biscar Two from a mile back September 30, 2013 10:30 AM BST
A couple of questions ......

Is the minimum dividend on the placepot £1.02 ?
(Imagine the scenario if the big staking punter gets his bet up)

Also given the takeout of 27% is there an arguement for him having his money returned on the basis that he couldn't win.
He stakes 1.5m the pool total is £1,587,948.80 so the amount available to be won after deductions is only £1,159,202.60 in which case the best scenario is a loss of £340,797.40.
There is no way he can "win" on the bet at all.
Does the same principle apply to pool betting?

Frames, if that is true then the customer must have a case for getting some money refunded. Still doesn't really explain the 1.5m tho. Must be a staking error too.
Report the.mad.dog.man September 30, 2013 1:22 PM BST
it was done near the off no error more like they got it for a few grand in far east good luck to them also
Report minardi September 30, 2013 1:29 PM BST
for it to be a staking error the person would have needed £1.5m in the bookies or betfair account how many people keep that kind of cash in a zero interest account with no governemnt security if the company goes bust - not many i would suggest.

There is something very very fishy with this and my earlier theory still holds that Fred runs bots on the pools to skim winnings - this one went wrong and piled loads of cash into the placepot pool.
Report SqueezeFirmly September 30, 2013 1:36 PM BST
I made an error once doing a jackpot perm, but nowhere near this scale.

I wanted 27 lines at 50p, total stake £13-50p

I was half asleep when I put it on and just clicked 'place bet' and 'confirm' without realising what I had done until 5 minutes before the first race went off.

I had put in 27 lines at £13-50p, total stake £364-50p.

I got £100 back on the first race with a shortish odds lay, but I lost the rest. Sad
Report Tattcorner September 30, 2013 1:58 PM BST
Shouldn't all accounts ask the owner "what is the maximum stake you are ever likely to place?" - "If you place a bet in excess of this, we will automatically ask you if the bet is intended."

Would hopefully avoid big bets not actually meant.
