I cannot remember a horse running off such a low mark. Tongue Tie and visor fitted for first time. Hope it can improve them. 4 years old now. Has a very patient owner. Good luck tonight Mr J Levenson.
That depends on how you are asking the question - sparrow..
Lowest Rating that any horse can 'run of' in a Handicap is now SET at 45 - .... If a horse can actually get a run in a race off a 'true 45' that is. However a horse Rated, say, 33 - but running off 45 - 'could' win such a race.
As happened last week, at Brighton .....
When - BESTFOOTFORWRD - Rated 37 at the time - WON -
But had to race off 47 (not including the apprentice jockey's claim) - appearing in the RESULTS as 'OH2' = 2 lbs 'out of the Handicap' - because of the Minimum 45 Rule ... But, actually, was 10 lbs 'out of the Handicap', without the Apprentice's Claim.

However - a Horse Rated, say, 30 could, also, feasibly - or more probably, theoretically, but unlikely - win a Conditions race - such as a Seller or Claimer.... Were that to happen - then it would have, obviously, run well above it's Rating of 30, though.

onlooker, I was thinking of the actual rating of the horse at the time, rather than the rating he ran off. I thought that about 10-20 years ago a horse whose rating was less than 20 actually managed to win a race.

There have been horseS Rated below 45 who have won - However - I do not have any written records as such - so we are in the same boat.
"White" does ring something of a bell - and has got me thinking of those big-field Amateur Riders' races at Redcar.
I haven't the time to start wading through all those, though
Amateur Riders' races would be a good - and somewhat logical, if you think of it - arena to look in.

onlooker, I have found this horse called Quakeress who won in 2000 rated 16 at the time and followed up rated 22.

I gave Quakeress a rating of 33 - for winning that race CONDITIONS race
It fitted in perfectly with the runner-up on 31, and the over 9 lengths 3rd - which was a 19 rated horse.
Quakeress then carried a 6lb penalty - and thus WON off a 'TRUE' 22 - the 'Minimum 45' Rule was NOT in place then - in a Selling Handicap.
She beat the third by 2 lengths - who ran off 30 - and then that 3rd won off 30, and again off 33 - and was 2nd, albeit beaten 4 lengths, of 38 - so, somewhat retrospectively - you could just get the 33 for the Selling Handicap win - at a squeeze.
I am sure there are others, though.

I completely forgot that horses were rated differently then, but a much better system for people like me that prefer low grade racing. I used to like the selling handicaps but not that banded stuff. As you say, there must have been others.

Perhaps the question, and answers, should be in TWO categories.
Well - I am sure, for comparison purposes, it should.
1. 'Lowest ever' - as you originally posted.
2. 'Lowest since the Minimum 45 Rule was brought in'.

The other division of that selling handicap won by Quakeress at Wolves went to an 8-y-old maiden called The Cottonwool Kid, who ran off 20 that day - he was actually rated 15, but was 3lbs out of the handicap and the rider put up 2lbs overweight.
Regardless of ratings, those two races must qualify as the lowest quality divided race ever staged!

Yes, mange - the early 1950s Annuals
Got them all - and seen that more than a few times
Phil Bull, himself would write up many, or most, of those Thumbnails ...
My personal favourite is the, slightly more subtle ... 'of no account'
They are too 'politically correct', nowadays - to go anywhere near down that road -
- and some deluded owner would probably try and sue them, too.

Rather higher rated I remember Madame Jones who was rated 32 when she started winning and won 12 races subsequently although to be fair she had won 3 races prior to her lowest mark. Does it say something about the trainer who got her to 32 or the one who improved her to win 12?

I have it running to '20' today - without, whatever you may feel about the Apprentice 7lb claim, though.
^ It beat three home -But was beaten 18 and a half lengths. I have it running to '20' today - without, whatever you may feel about the Apprentice 7lb claim, though.
