Good morning.
I broke even Virgin. The weather was distictly autumnal and there was a bigger crowd than I like these days,but Beverley is a nice little track with decent viewing. The more or less straight course is only 5f. I hate meetings where 5 out of 6 races are held over a straight mile course. Newmarket isn't on my bucket list.

Beverley must be one of the most well attended tracks for its size. Well done for breaking even as I did not like the look of that meeting and never had a bet there.

I was thinking about telegrams and I seem to remember "boys" definitely not "girls" of course delivering them on little red mopeds,or whatever they were called then.

My grandfather's family never got one. He did the sensible thing and surrendered 
Interestingly, speaking about grandfathers my mothers father simply disappeared from view in 1916. Nobody ever claimed to know what happened to him although my grandmother said he was shot for desertion which wasn't true.

My mother had a cousin who went on the run in WWII.
Rather to her horror he visited her at the Inland Revenue where she was working.
My mother had a fairly common surname but it was unusually spelt/mispelt. Years later I had a client who had the surname,but he was black. He was pleasant enough so I mentioned to him that we could be related,but... He volunteered his mother was white.
MY mother and I eventually worked out he must have been the grandson of the awol cousin. My mother had heard a rumour his daughter had had a son out of wedlock to a black guy.

It is indeed a funny world, salmon. Talk about common surname as my grandfather who went missing was called William Smith as was the family name. I spent some 20 odd years researching that family as my mother wanted to know about her father and myself a keen family historian was only too pleased to help. I found out plenty of this large family yet never discovered what happened to William the French polisher by trade.
