This is what happens when you allow commercial third parties, with no interest whatsoever in the long term health of the sport, to take control...

The reason why is that Horse Racing in this country is run for the benefit of the Bookmakers. The worst thing to have happened was to let Baldy have the Tote. The Bookmakers want more and more races with as many runners as possible. (I see Ladbrokes are moaning about small fields and better going reducing their profits). So we have the All Weather and lots of low grade races along with Summer Jumping put on to accommodate them. This suits the Racecourses as well as it keeps the prize money down and gives them more attendance money.

The change needed will come naturally has more Owners get out of the game due to poor returns. Breeders will produce fewer horses because they can't sell them and the downward spiral will have begun.

The BHA answer is to ask the owners to run their horse more often; Well they can go and get stuffed! I will run mine to suit my own ends, not the Bookmakers.

A serious overall is needed. Horses less than a 60 rating should be restricted to a few low grade tracks and given a point to point like status. ie. Don't put it in the Post, Local track betting only. This would ensure better racing on the better tracks with the "dross" sidelined.

It is never going to happen in a Month of Sundays though while the BHA hang onto the coat tails of the Bookmaking Industry.

Last sentence should also read 'while the BHA have a direct financial interest in the profitability of the bookmaking industry', imo...

Lots of people at the BHA have a 'vested interest' in their being LOTS of RACING, on an EVERY DAY basis - whatever the level - as it assist their existence.

In other words ....

Job PROTECTION.

You are right onlooker, but if owners wont run their horses more as the number dwindles, Where are they going to go?

Time to be pro active now. If we have better quality racing more will be bet, of that I am sure.
