Australian jockey Simone Montgomerie has died, aged 26, after suffering fatal injuries in a fall at Fannie Bay racecourse, Darwin.
Mother-of-two Montgomerie was riding Riahgrand in the sixth race on the Darwin Cup card but fell from from her mount in the straight.
She received treatment on the track from paramedics and was rushed to Royal Darwin Hospital in a critical condition, but she died shortly after.
The remainder of Monday's card was abandoned.
A statement from Darwin Turf Club read: 'During race six today there was an accident where Simone Montgomerie was riding Riahgrand.
'Simone fell and sustained traumatic injuries.
'She was transported from the racetrack to Royal Darwin Hospital with St John Ambulance.
'Attending to her were two doctors assisted by paramedics.
'It is with great regret that we were advised by the family that Simone passed away shortly after arriving at the hospital.
'Darwin Turf Club in conjunct with the TRNT (Thoroughbred Racing of the Northern Territory) stewards agreed it was best to abandon the meeting in order to begin an investigation into this tragic event.
'There will be a full investigation, which has already been initiated by the stewards.
'The Darwin Turf Club along with the entire industry offer our deepest condolences and sympathies to the family of Ms Montgomerie.'
Her father, Peter Montgomerie, trained 2005 Melbourne Cup runner-up On A Jeune.

Surprised by the lack of interest on this thread - there are always countless people rushing to post when they see someone or a horse go down. Is it only tragic if you witness it?

There was another thread started by Facts, Bilbo. There were more posts on that one.

How very sad as bilbo writes there would be loads of rip if it was a horse that had died but a human being?

There is another thread on the subject, and thinking you are better than others for displaying your personal feelings in public is a bit extreme.

Awful, terribly sad news, RIP.Sad
Found this suprising statistic,
In Australia race riding is regarded as being the second most deadly job, after offshore fishing. From 2002 to 2006 five deaths and 861 serious injuries were recorded.[6]Shocked

Report brain dead jockeys August 5, 2013 10:17 PM BST
being a flat jockey in australia is much more dangerous to being a flat jockey in america or europe........the tracks are very tight with short run ins...........the speed that they go around the bends can be frightening..........and they have big fields too........deadly stuff.
