Having been at this game for fifty years I think I am in a position to make a few comments
Par example There was a person who used to come racing who when he left his job got a nice hand shake
It was a nice stake he had of over 20 large
My opinion of him was that he knew the maths and had everything that he needed to make it
Where he fell down was he just could not bring himself to put the money down
When he did have it on he fell apart before your eyes
You hit a bad run most people just go they want there money back yesterday
Myself when I lose my money I also go on the chase but I know I have to stop and go back to basics before I am in the poor house
It's very hard being a pro gambler
The facts are that it's not about winning large amounts of money al the time it's about making a small % on your turn over
Yes every now and again one goes for a touch but not as often as people think
The reason Dave Nev is no longer a pro punter is he thought he could win zillions and got to big for his own boots
Eddie The Shoe will tell you DONT BE GREEDY
Dave listen to Eddie but Eddie never told him that most important point

excellent thread by seaside. If you can control your emotions and not chase when a jockey has just not tried an inch on a horse you have bet on,or you have been very unlucky in a sporting event,then i reckon is possible. But most people like myself just go on tilt when they see injustice and bad luck,wish i could change it.

two reasons why it goes wron as far as I can witness.... can't put the money down and can't handle it anyhow (as per OP) and chasin' losses when you are "unlucky"... and by jingo (and I don't know why it happens but if just does seem to) does the bad luck and bad run then just get worse and fookin worse if you can't stop. |

Yep, no good when a loser starts to panic and begins to chase. Like in poker talk, a player who is 'on tilt' means when a player is knocked off his game and begins to play irrationally. Best thing to do is come away, don't be a gambler, chances are you'll never be a good one. Come away, have a break from it. If you chase you react in an even more irrational manner.

Don't know about anyone else but i was doing a hell of a lot better on betfair when i started years ago than i am now.It was so simple then,making money out of finding losers,but over a period of time the mental scars start to build and you just find yourself fighting a constant psychological battle.

The problem is, an addiction is at play, it rarely works when you ask a drug addict to step away and take a break or an alcoholic, and gambling is no different whatsoever, we all know what should happen, but for the majority, when it goes t1ts up, the addiction kicks in.

Most betting shops contain at least one punter who is good enough at picking winners to turn pro.
One factor not mentioned so far is having a big enough tank to ride out inevitable losing runs. |

Everything in life goes in cycles. Plot a graph of profit over time and its a bell shape curve. I suspect Dave Nevison graph would show that. Life span of a pro gambler do well to last 10 years. Life span of a semi-pro much easier to extend.

I am about 5 years behind you seaside. Well done by the way.
One important thing for me is to look after the loved ones after a decent win, and treat yourself too. We have had some good holidays from winning bets and I bought my horse from the winnings of a bet too. (I have never been a pro punter though). Good thread, good luck. |

The loved ones is a good point, because even if you do alright from the game, you can't replace the lost time and attention they have suffered, to my eternal shame I have to admit there is/have been far too many occasions where I have packed my boy off to his playstation for the afternoon when really I should be over the park with him for a kick around with the ball...this brings me back to the addiction point
