Rode it as if he was expecting everything to just move out of his way - make no decision to do anything positive at all and seemingly just accepted he was going to lose from a long way out. High up on the list of meeting shockers. That's the problem riding for Godolphin - he knows connections won't say anything.

I think you are all being to kind.....£48.60 placepot riding on Sousa and he drops a well drawn horse out the back thereby negating his draw advantage. Then makes no attempt to close the gap until far too late, flucking disgraceful, I would quite happily punch his shi$ head in the vvanker.

Listen to those complete stupid cants on telly....shuffled back, no where to go, inexperienced filly blah blah blah What a load of old shi$e.....terrible ride on a horse that was quite clearly a class apart and should have won comfortably, shocking for the integrity of the sport and those guys on telly want hanging for talking such nonsense.

WELL SAID YORKIE....its the patronising old crap from the likes of these journos that upset punters more than the shocking rides. Just call it what it is, poor riding.

Her two wins last year came in good races and she strormed clear to win by a whopping eight lengths at Doncaster last month

Apart from her stable companion everything else in the race had run at least twice as much. "Inexperienced filly" is an accurate statement.
Poorish ride but not as bad as a few earlier in the week.

horse won a class 4 all weather race and then won a 5 runner class 3 race on soft going so nothing in it's form to suggest it should be fav for a big ascot handicap on good to firm.
it only finished in front of the other godolphin runner because barzalona eased that one right down after it got blocked coming into the final furlong, though he was unlikely to win as lack of a recent run meant he ran out of steam close home.

I think the standard of jockeyship this week at Ascot has been really pi$$ poor, too many fancied horses being given bad rides. Queally is always awful to be honest, yet Cecil kept him on board Frankel, Henry must have thought even Queally couldn't get that horse beat. R.I.P

Outpost.....the horse finished hard held slicing through the pack up to jam stick, Sousa just let the horse get too far behind and got going too late to get the horse running properly. Totally ill judged ride.

basilbrush I agree it wasn't the jockey's finest hour but it finished fast because it had done little up to then. possibly if the jockey had got to work on it sooner, it might not have finished so well as it wouldn't have had so much petrol left in the tank.
These big field handicaps at ascot are notorius for hard luck stories because of the short straight. If you're not in a good position turning in then it's difficult to get to the leaders, and this horse was shuffled back to last place as they turned for home. The jockey then had to let the horse get balanced again before he would run on.
as I said it wasn't the jockeys finest hour as he twice went for gaps that closed, but I thought it was too short a price for what the horse had done previously.

No bet in the race but that was awful, horse would've won given a proper ride. To make matters worse for anyone who was waiting for it for a place De Souza was almost afraid to get stuck in in the last furlong as it would've looked even worse(if that's possible) to see the horse flash home in third. Lot of bad rides this week, just going to form on flat racing in general to be fair. Wally Swinburn was spot on the other week about the poor standard of jockeyship on the flat. But so long as that world renowned top class jockey Richard Perham keeps teaching them how to look good on a horse but not be actually able to ride that's all that matters.

Excellent post MJK.....Ive been watching racing for over forty years and I can see a bad ride when one is given, I can also see when the horse itself is to blame, or when the conditions or a negative draw has played a part in the outcome of a race. Today, the only thing wrong was the jockey, he didn't stoke the horse up early enough after meandering through the race at the back of the field. When faced with a wall of horses in front of him in the straight Sousa made little or no effort to give the horse a chance, he just sat and waited for non existent gaps to open up instead of riding the horse to get the best finish possible. It was truly horrible to watch, he just rode hands and heels all the way up the straight without making any attempt to get the horse rolling, the horse was so full of running he took Sousa to the line unaided by the jockey, absolute disgrace for a 3/1 favourite at Royal Ascot.

De Sousa takes a lot of the blame because the only way he was going to get a run was by coming down the outside instead of cutting to the inside early in the straight. That killed off any chance he had there and then.
But the problems started when the horse didn't have the pace or experience to keep hold of the good draw near the rail so it wasn't all down to him.

Agree he should have brought the horse to the outside, he had every chance to do that and get the horse rousted along, he probably would have won. However, Sousa sat and waited for around a furlong before deciding to to stay put in the middle and let the horse simply idle home unplaced. Sousa did give up the benefit of the good draw early in the race, not sure if that was the horses lack of pace or not, judging by the lack of effort Sousa made on the horse I think he may have decided to drop the horse out at the back himself. One things for sure Albasharah is quite a decent horse, he must be to finish so close after such an ill judged ride at all levels by Sousa.
