Looked to be a big crowd in middle of course on saturday.
Does anyone know how many bookmakers were there and what business was like?

I go racing at least once a week - for a day out with my pals - the comments from unbiased and barstool are right on the money.

The prices just change automatically without any input from the bookmaker - all along the line the prices are virtually the same - we (my pals and me) would all hate to see the bookies disappear from the course but there is no denying that the colour and buzz has gone from the ring.

Betfair is the problem but it is not going to go away - bookies no longer have to make a tissue - nobody has an opinion anymore.

I should add that Betfair has helped my punting enormously but as far as on course is concerned there has been a price to pay .....
Report mr crisp June 10, 2013 2:51 PM BST
thats what you decent bookies are fighting

the general feeling of mistrust and sharp practises that these charlatans bring into the ring.

have they never heard of customer service
Report barstool June 10, 2013 2:54 PM BST
How I pine for the old chalk boards. A price would "go" yet there would still be someone there prepared to lay it. Remember often being assured "don't worry you will all get on "

This is what the ring is missing, a few characters prepared to tempt the punters in.

I had the same experience at Ripon last week. 3/1 on the board, I asked for 3 twenties. The price changed to 11/4 has she had the
money in her hand and she said to me "you can have your money back if you don't want 11/4. I took my money back and we went home.

That is just way beyond despicable, that's not a bookmaker. The old school layers like Stephen Little for example who the old timers on here will no doubt remember would never dream of behaviour like that. I would have properly kicked off and made a scene if that happened to me.
Report mr crisp June 10, 2013 3:19 PM BST
quite right bar stool

you could stand in front of the bookmakers do your mental arithmatic and most times work out if your

fancy was going to go out in price or if you had better grab the odds on show.

in fairness to the books it must be pointed out that the slaveish following of betfair has slashed

their profit margins and the old bit of value we all used to scuttle about looking for has been given

to us for free in most cases.

the problem facing the books is that betfair gives even better value without all the expences of going

to the course the offices will give you BOG double result proper ew terms etc.

most people who go and watch live sport go for the atmosphere once the buzz starts to go for you you might as well stop at home and take advantage of the wall to wall overage thats available now a days

agreed slippy , it isn't it's a girl that knows a horse has four legs and nothing more. the person who altered the price was probably 20 yards away
I can add that if you backed with me you would have got the price you wanted even without asking but I can't speak for others.
and the prices all being the same is because they are all price matching the exchange [ or close to it ] what do you want them to do
in the old days everyone would be 9/4 , unbiased , and your friend would have found pleasure pinching 5/2. NOW THEY ARE ALL 5/2 and nobodies happy

I don't think many people mind the flimpers in the ring as the other books usually just get on with their own thing...... but the stories that crop up on here are a total farce ( a knock back for 16 ponies, £20 refused at 14 cos it was 14 on the machine and a whole list of others) and give the people who actually want to have a go at making a book at the track a bad name.....

It really is time to somehow differentiate the proper bookmakers in the ring compared to the Flimpers, I think somebody suggested a colour coded flag on the joint before...

Report tinkler June 10, 2013 11:26 PM BST
If all the tracks you attend Factmachine ,are bigger than the machine then they would be saturated with Albers.
Adge so your saying its okay for punters to bet on course only if they want to back the favourite or in races with small fields?
The only way the on course bookies can offer anything to the punter is if they operate within a 106% on all races ,otherwise it's  factual
poorer value. Not much margin for error but surely someone's skilled enough to do it, the 120-140% books are the work of greedy leeches.
If the off course layers can make a living off a 101% book  ,then it tells you the skill level of the on course bookies that they rarely get
anywhere near it.  There's no point in bookies defending their positions on here ,punters have been on course and seen the odds on offer with
their own eyes.

I can't understand why any punter at a racecourse MIDWEEK would ever want to bet with other than a course bookmaker
the win price is the same or better on course with all short ones [ allowing for commission ] on every race.
the bigger priced horses are smaller than exchanges but if the punter wants each way at 10/1 or so which they normally do the bookmaker often has a bigger place proportion...and as you can bet place only on course the value is there too.
Report mugbookie June 11, 2013 10:23 AM BST
tinkler- You'll find that the average GROSS operating margin of on course books is around 8-12 %. As Adge suggests, why not take your ipad/phone to any racetrack...especially northern ones...and compare available prices/value.If you are prepared to be objective about your research, your findings will suggest..accounting for commission.. that for horses 6/1 or less the value is MAINLY in the ring...for horses between 6/1 and 10/1, the ring is highly competitive....and for horses 10/1 or over the value is MAINLY on exchanges. On that basis, anybody who likes to back outsiders to small stakes is most definitely better off at home on the exchanges, complaining about the on course value...alternatively,anybody who prefers betting the front two or three to a few quid is MOST DEFINITELY better off  having a punt in the ring...especially with the likes of Adge and Factmachine. but if the price went out to 11/4 it would with all books so then what would he do then , take the 11/4 or wait for someone to go 3/1 .
punters want the same price commission free with on course books but when they are offered it they are still not happy . is there never an occasion when they miss a price on here when it shortens or doesn't that count

Regarding FACTS,there are obviously still a few good oncourse bookmakers around, apparently yourself included, however when a poster posts up things that took place,it is pointless denying that it was true, and wasn't the case.
Obviously you have to stand your corner and stick together, but you should still be able to see the overall picture from the punter's point of view, and not assume that they are always wrong, don't understand bookmaking, and are after something that isn't on offer. You aren't present at EVERY course!
Many times bookmakers have responded with"why don't you get a pick, and try it yourself, and see how long you last".
Well that is stupid ,and rude, again assuming that the majority of posters are clueless in the way a book is made.As this is an anonymous forum you wouldn't know one way ,or the other, who you are responding to.

for my own business I bet each way on all 4 runner races and many with 3 runners. I bet place only on all races even the one's with odds on favourites. I pricematch betfair on all horses up to 7/2 on midweek days [ but I don't top the exchange ] except to the next customer in my queue.

if you get it wrong it costs you a few bob if you get it right bingo

or are we back to the argument of everybody betting to figures not opinions.
Report adge June 11, 2013 4:10 PM BST
not as simple as that , mr crisp , as many of us do have opinions. we can lay on here too.
let's stay with the 5/2 chance which is popular.
if we decide we want to lay and the price on here drops to  3.45 / 3.5 [lay ] we wil leave 5/2 up.
if it drops to 3.35 / 3.4 why would we leave it there when arbers wil take our 5/2 and lay 3.4 themselves
don't forget we can lay 3.4 on here too
Report mr crisp June 11, 2013 4:19 PM BST

Spot on Adge.

We always put up the favourite (and quite often the 2nd fav too) at what's on offer on here,we prefer to lay to the on course punter and not the armchair fiddler on here.

However if the horse(s) can't be laid then we do so on here to the amount we're happy with then reduce the price.

If the price drops in the meantime then we try to lay at the lesser price and reduce the board price accordingly....it beats me why punters don't take the price while it's there originally,as Facts correctly states, the punter has never had it so good.
