Report formoftheace October 15, 2025 3:23 PM BST
The life was awash with tipsters at one time tbh……some with half the page……made fortunes from the weak minded…

Large purple coloured punters eating from the hand…

Then there was the yellow coloured advertisement coining it in like confetti tbf…..

Ex channel 4 individual……ffs…

MJH used to be on the back page of paper some weeks I think although usually it was Fineform.
My dad used to subscribe to Late Night Extra...no idea whether it was any good though
Report madhatter October 15, 2025 4:47 PM BST
Might have been Late Extra maybe

I recall a R J Frances back from those days. Think you had to send a postal order in advance and the "tip" would arrive in Fridays post.

Not sure whether it was his real name.

Alan Carfax used to advertise a weekend double turned out he was Martin Julian of dark horses fame.

Report jimnast October 15, 2025 7:21 PM BST

Report tom-tom October 15, 2025 7:25 PM BST

Report jimnast October 15, 2025 7:58 PM BST

It was at the same time as the John francome racing club was getting going they had one of there early functions at Newbury that afternoon.

Pearlyman was beat by Very Promising that day.
Report jimnast October 15, 2025 8:08 PM BST
Blimey Penzance I didn’t realise that but of course it would have been game spirt day also, pearlyman was a fabulous horse forgotten by some when we talk about the great 2 milers.
Report jimnast October 15, 2025 8:14 PM BST
Pearlyman did win a game spirit might have been the previous year
Report penzance October 15, 2025 8:17 PM BST
He did '87.
Funny enough the 2 previous runnings abandoned.

Ml Harrington and rj Francis were the same chap,  he used to do different names on the big flat races and he was a couple of others names as well, always full page adverts, I forgot his real name but it will come to me, spoke to him quite a few times as he used to gleam some info off me but my game was not the big handicaps, my number was passed on to him by Clive holt, think Clive was fed up with him ringing all the time, he was a character and he did get the inside info as he used to holiday after Christmas for 6 weeks in the Bahamas with all the top flat trainers and he knew them personally, so that’s where he got his info from, he was a very well spoken posh man and the gift of the gab but a nice jolly chap, not sure he was profitable but he would have had a few good winners with his bahamas connections which were genuine
Report jimnast October 16, 2025 9:25 AM BST
Good morning Penzance

They seemed to lose the fixture a lot in the 80s I remember been tipped one for the 1983 Schweppes a horse I had never heard of but that didn’t bother me back then can’t remember the horses handicap mark but was on at 20/1 plus ,I think by the Saturday it was around 10s ,anyway the meeting failed its morning inspection so it was money back no problem,5 weeks later I stood and watch the horse beat ekbalco and broadsword to become the champion hurdler at 40/1 Cry

Nice, Foyles, yeah the tartan lining was a feature, I always had the black jackets
I think if I tried to do the zip up now it would be impossible
It would look like I was wearing a bib!

Wore it twice…..
Report DixieDean60 October 16, 2025 4:41 PM BST
I've had loads of Harrington jackets over the years, got one at the moment with the tartan lining, lovely to wear.

They do retro ones on amazon in loads of different colours.
Report DrGordons October 17, 2025 9:12 AM BST
Know all Oct 15: you're right with your recollection RJ Francis wasn't bad at all. I think he was the one who tipped Cala Mesquida to win the Schweppes about 20-1.
Is there anyone old enough to remember George Betts of Epsom? His 'one horse Saturday letter' cost 20 quid in the 60s but it was very successful. Hard to get a pirate copy as the operation was very tight.
