Is that we did not get to see where he may have finished had he not gone crazy.

Just hope he is ok in the morning and he can show his form again. Though my initial reaction is that we will not see him again.

Shocked Bolger aimed him at the Derby. He stated during his 2-y-o campaign that he was an out and out miler who might get 10f maximum. Should have kept him to a mile, & tried 10f later in season.

too be honest i am glad they ran him and found out. Good luck too them in the future!
Report holywell June 1, 2013 4:46 PM BST
We'll never know, but, Sheikh Mohammed may well have encouraged Jim Bolger to run the horse today. I wouldn't have thought anyone could make Jim Bolger doubt his judgement, but, the sheikh paid the big bucks.

It has marred his record & makes him look a far lesser colt.

You would think that Sheikh Mo would have got the message by now and started to use Coolmore stallions. The guy and his operation is getting creamed year after year by the irish lads

sheik gets it wrong time and time again, just as well he has an endless pot.
Needs to get rid of the weasel crisford and bring back sir henry

Dawn Approach will have his day in the sun again over shorter trips, Epsom Derby was a blip. You knew after 200 yards it wouldn't win today.

He wasn't imho. Bolger didnt even have him entered originally. I think Bolger would have ran him in Irish Guineas if still in full ownership
Report timmy1 June 1, 2013 5:30 PM BST
Don't think you can think any lesser of this horse. It is a miler or 1m2f at most. Can recover it's reputation. Remember Dubai Millenium. Only time he was ever beat was in the Derby and was never beaten again when returned to shorter distances.
Report flyingbolt June 1, 2013 5:34 PM BST
Did you win an enormous mount on your massive lay ,johnnyrant. ?
Report johnnyrant June 1, 2013 5:50 PM BST
I didn't lay him fb - backed Libertarian e/w. Did you back him?
Report brain dead jockeys June 1, 2013 6:24 PM BST
it was clearly the sheiks decision..........he had some entourage with him today. given the amount of $ they have invested, they are the biggest bunch of failures in the history of european racing. that says something.

I don't think that proved anything about his stamina tbh. I didn't see anyone on here saying he wouldn't settle ( apologies if anybody did ). I imagine most people who thought he wouldn't stay expected the final furlong to find him out. Unlike his sire he has always appeared rather laid-back. Something got to him.
Report ima_mazed66 June 1, 2013 6:34 PM BST
Nice to see a common sense post from the OP and you should always go for the Derby with a Guineas winner unless it has just fallen over the line to hold on, as you only get the one chance to run in it and if you truly don't stand then it's hardly career over and there are plenty of other options open to you. That really is the pity with Dawn Approach though, that we didn't see how he would have handles 12f in a calmer manner.

Sheikh Mo is already using the Coolmore sires though, he's just usually using them an extra generation back with sons of Coolmore sires passing on their bloodlines.

The only thing it proved about his stamina is that he wouldn't staya mile and a half in a million years.Surprised

I don't think you can know that flyingbolt. But it's 1.01 we will never find out.
Report Try My Best June 1, 2013 6:41 PM BST
Yes he was Dunerunner.Looked perfectly relaxed in preparade and paddock. I just didn't expect him to act like that in the race. Does anybody know where Dermot Browne is?

I know it,salmon.
We'll never have another chance to find out but I know it..

I never thought for one minute that he would stay the trip in the Derby after reading his form.

It's all there, and if you can't see it then you simply don't know enough.
Which goes for the racing tipsters who tipped it as well, they really should know better.
Report salmon spray June 1, 2013 6:49 PM BST
If you mean his pedigree Crippen I think the evidence of that is mixed. The dam wasn't much good but is related to some decent US horses which of course ran over shorter than 12f but that's the nature of American racing.
Report Jack Bauer '24' June 1, 2013 6:50 PM BST
Bolger never considered it to be a Derby horse and I very much doubt he would have run in the race if the Sheikh had not bought a majority share.
Report skygreenzone June 1, 2013 6:51 PM BST
Is that the horse finished now?Ican't see it recovering from that, think it's the end of his racing days.

fair play to them for giving it a go,it gave the race some interest and thats whats needed in racing

See the Stars ran pretty much the same in the ARC. What a horse he was to win after pulling like he did. That was class.
Report Steamship June 1, 2013 7:07 PM BST
flyiongbolt in the we must be mad thread you said that you had big doubts about him staying but not enough to lay him. Now when the horse clearly was not himself you claim that you know he would not stay the mile and a half. I at least stated that he should be 7-4 at least.

With all the aftertimers I'm surprised he went off favourite, because now everyone knows he was not going to stay.
Report ReaseHeath June 1, 2013 7:08 PM BST
I think what happens next will be interesting too - SJP might come too soon after today's experience so we might next see him in Sussex Stakes, potentially gives Toronado a shot a redemption in SJP and set up a re-match in Sussex Stakes.

Also, is this Telescope any good? Can he prove it in the Ascot Derby and/or at The Curragh?
Report flyingbolt June 1, 2013 7:19 PM BST
Strange post,Steamship.
I said I had big doubts about him staying. Not enough to lay him.
Which part of that are you struggling with ?

If you think now he will ever stay a mile and a half I wish you good luck....you'll need it.
Report Loanwolf June 1, 2013 7:28 PM BST
It is irrational to talk of  Dawn Approach   being finishedSure it is finished with racing over a mile and a half/quarter thats all.Over a mile it will a good bet.If 2/1or more for St James Palace/Sussex stakes that will be a good bet.I layed it today but will not be laying it over a mile.
Report EastLower Gooner June 1, 2013 8:09 PM BST
Just hope they don't rush into anything or go crazy trying to get him back into the winner's enclosure(you know what Jim's like when it comes to racing his horses). Would be nice to just give him a break, see how the mile and 10f divisions are playing out ie St James Palace, Prince of Wales, Eclipse and then pick a nice target for him. They're some really nice horses lying in wait for him....Al Kazeem, Farhh, Magician and rematch with Toranado who might not be done with as yet..probably something like the Jacques Le Marios would be right up his street. a mile, cut in the ground and probably avoid all the top horses. They lost the Derby but could have the last laugh if they clean up races like Champion Stakes at the end of the season. Hell...sheik Mo could even take him back to Dubai for the World Cup.

No horse would have lasted 12f pulling as hard as Dawn Approach did and for that long. Plus there's also no way they would have hit the front as early as they did if the horse had settled. To conclude he didn't stay on one race alone is arguable but we will probably never get the chance to see again if he could have.

Why would you think a horse by a Derby winner and one that was up with the pace all the way, hit the front 2f and was going away at the line as a 5L winner in his first try at a mile was an obvious indication that it wouldn't stay? If Dawn Approach had pulled as hard in the Guineas as in the Derby he wouldn't have got the mile either but that doesn't mean he doesn't get it.

After Frankel's SJP win they probably decided not to step him up based on that race but led all the way next time out at a mile and later showed he got 10f but pulling too hard for too long will beat most horses.
