He looked over at the pole thinking it was the winning line, i was on classic colori and its grim! but genuine mistake imo

Wouldn't rule it out, because when you look back to the points approaching the half furlong pole he didn't look to be all out riding a finish did he.

An opinion, still think he took it easy and ball5ed up.
Its easier to say you mistook the winning post than saying i wanted to win it cosily and made a pr1ck of myself.

He was well past the half furlong pole when he stopped riding.

the only post without a lollipop on was the winning post - clever that - and he mistook the 1/2 furlong pole for it. Obvious to a blind man.

My first impression was exactly the same as reculver's. Looked very much like he was trying to win on the bit. Unbiased view as I never had an interest.

horse was under the cosh thru penultimate furlong...drops his hands a stride or 2 after ½f pole...open and shut case
