the small trainers i know do this for only one reason their love of the game ,,, the animals ,the colour and the hope that one day they just might get a good one .They believe in the existence of unicorns .OK i know thats more than one reason .

Time will tell...................In the smaller yards once youve got em all Hcped & theve all won with no new ones coming through the door it goes quiet............these top yards can pick & choose off the waiting list.

But I know what U mean & 1 should look at your list before backing!

I would imagine the lay button on here could keep a small yard ticking over

kemosabe has outlined "why" they keep going. The OP asked "how" they keep going. Presumably they are farming/have other businesses/are idle rich?

As long as the owners keep paying the bills, also at £1 plus per mile, a lot of trainers make considerable money on transporting the horse(s) to the races.

Owners don't mind too much as they are getting a runner and possibly a winner!

Noel Chance , Gold Cup winning trainer......

I think it is unfair to just look at win/run statistics without considering the number/quality of horses in training. Noel Chance has two Gold Cups on his CV. It is hard to believe he has suddenly become a poor trainer. With the loss of Alan Weller the small number of potentially decent horses has disappeared. Would the likes of Nicky Henderson have trained any more winners with Chance's string? There are masses of seemingly under- performing trainers out there.

^ To You two cynics ....

The original question could have been - and often WAS, similarly, asked - in the CENTURY way before the INTERNET was ever thought of .... let alone Betfair.
