Clare Balding will receive a special award for outstanding achievement in factual presenting at this year's TV Baftas, organisers have announced.

TV committee chairman Andrew Newman said her work covering London 2012 - on the BBC for the Olympics and on Channel 4 for the Paralympics - had made her "a national treasure".

A "delighted" Balding said she "may not stop smiling until the night".

Graham Norton will present the 12 May awards at London's Royal Festival Hall.

Bafta said the award - last presented in 2006, to Jamie Oliver - was being given "in appreciation of her incredible dedication to presenting across entertainment and sporting events".

Previous recipients of the factual presenting special award include Jon Snow, Andrew Marr, Jeremy Paxman and Kate Adie.

Mr Newman said Balding's body of work "over the last 13 years speaks for itself".

He said that, last summer, her "warmth and charisma helped bring the country together as we celebrated in Team GB and Paralympic GB's success".

"She is a trusted and intelligent live presenter with an ability to transcend genre and we're delighted to honour her contribution to television," he added.

'Unusual household'

Balding is also known for presenting horse racing coverage on Channel 4 as well as series including BBC One's Britain's Brightest and Radio 4 walking programme Ramblings.

Her first book, My Animals and Other Family - based on her experiences growing up "in a rather unusual household" - was a bestseller that won biography of the year at the National Book Awards.

Meanwhile, the Bafta craft awards will take place at the London City Brewery on Sunday night

Balding is obnoxious, I would much prefer if she wasn't involved in racing or sport in general. She'll be chalking the scores at the World darts final next. Omnipresent and an unpleasant manner about her.

Clare's got her knockers, as would have had them ROFLing on 1970s prime-time television.

Is the phrase, "everyone's out of step bar me," tattooed on the foreheads of the CB-haters?

Her book was the biggest load of mince ever published. Who on Earth buys crap like that?

One should take all these so called celebrities and maroon them all on some god forsaken island.

Showbiz folk are all *****.

I quite like Clare both as a presenter and a person. Have to admit though that I am surprised some of you homophobics have missed the obvious "transcends gender" joke.

I know her as she lives around the corner. And she is a nice person who will talk with people if stopped in her daily life unlike some celebs around here.
Sad that some people base her on what they see on screen or bash her behind a computer on a homophobic basis over the years.

Remember that repeated homophobic comments from someone towards someone is a crime in itself and is not treated lightly by the CPS if someone was to take action. Surprised BF allow such comments to pass without someone flagging the post up as it is a crime these days.

Claire's no looker but is one of the very best racing presenters we've got , has a real understanding of racing which is more than can be said of poor man's eye candy air heads like Zoe , Alex , Gina etc.

The whole Balding 'national treasure' nonsense only shows how readily the not that bright will jump on any available bandwagon, imho, even if it is one that is condescending to them the entire time she is on camera...
