I totally agree. He has as many winners in Ireland as the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th in the Trainers title this year. It really is an unhealthy state for Irish racing

Here we go again the use of the word "genius" to describe a simple horse trainer, getting horses fit to run in a horse race is hardly the stuff of genius?, in Mullins case very expensive purchases.

A complete joke, what a waste of time.
This is supposed to be competetive racing but one trainer has all the best horses. And yes anyone could do it with a modicum of knowlege, its just down to money. Get the best horses and you can become a genius. |

Right flyingbolt and jmc give me some examples where Willie stands out from the crowd to be adorned the way OTT description of "GENIUS"?.
I'm pretty sure most trainers prepare a horse much the same as the next guy for a horse race?, which usually amounts to working them on the gallops. What does Willie do different that Tom, Tony and his inlaw Margaret don't do?, considering I'm sure they all learned the ropes from their father Paddy?. |

Be related to a top trainer, get lucky by having a few good horses early in your career like Florida Pearl and you usually get noticed, so some more flushed owners send you a few expensive ones and these turn out to be pretty decent too and now you're at the top of the tree and all the big owners want to send you their horses, yet you don't train your horses any different than than your brother Tom and Tony or your sister in law Margeret?.

Be related to a top trainer...So was Jim Dreaper. So were Willie's siblings.It would be hard to argue that Willie hasn't surpassed by a mile anything Paddy achieved.

Nobody denies the guy can train horses but its safe to say scores of other trainers would do the same job (some even better maybe?) if they were training the hugely expensive purchases that Willie has at his disposal?. Yes he had 14 winners this week (charity race included) and plenty of placed horses but he also had a succession of fancied ones turned over. To get back to the original point of the thread its not healthy for Irish National Hunt racing and its the same on the flat where just two trainers have the vast bulk of the best horses at their respective codes. Willes laughing all the way to the bank so he doesnt care if you call him a genius or a simple horse trainer, but I suppose he doesnt mind if the media keep calling him a genius even if hes s****ing at the description underneath his breath as he knows the owners are listening in and if you say black is white often enough you eventually start to believe it. |

I agree it's not great for one stable to be so dominant. It's the same over here. It's the way it is but Mullins has got to the top by success.

I agree with this. I think though the Flat is a bit better in that you have Bolger, and some 2nd rank trainers who on their day can provide decent opposition. The national hunt scene is at a worrying cross roads. Gigginstown are the ONLY decent opposition and even they are unable to get anyway close unless having horses with Mullins (  )Meade is a spent force, Elliot is feeding off scraps and the rest are either absolute rubbish at training or have very poor stock. What makes Mullins stand out though is when he gets horses off "Low Grade" trainers and suddenly ends up improving them by upwards of 30ilbs (Thousand Stars, Abbey Lane etc etc......) |

Contaminated feed? I cant believe he is doing anything spectacularly different that most other top trainers or even journeymen trainers do?. Nobody can give me a satisfactory answer that can stand up to the closest scrutiny?. |
