The coffin dodgers will tell you Arkle was the greatest ever 2-mile chaser which is why there are all those races named after him.

Arkle remains the greatest on the basis on weight carrying performances and those who crab him don't know the half of it.

In a way, it is a great pity that the format of current racing means that the very best chasers never run in handicaps.  In the days of Arkle and Flyingbolt, the big handicaps were effectively grade 1's and worth (comparatively) huge sums.

For me I'd give my right arm (almost literally!!! - left handedWink) to see SS take on the above two at equal weights over 2 1/2 miles at SandownGrin.

@Howdi -- you missed the joke which was that Arkle was the greatest staying chaser but has 2-mile chases named after him.

if Arkle had not been injured he have won circa 6 Cheltenham Gold Cups imo
He did not just beat his field at levels...he give them 2 stone or more(incluing Gold Cup horses)

Denman and Desert Orchid ran in handicaps. Won them too. I don't really understand the argument that Kauto Star (say) can't carry 12 stone in handicaps but can win Gold Cups and King Georges under the same weight.

Odd isn't it. Only a few months ago Cue Card was not much cop on here. Now SS has beten him he's a wonder horse. Whatever Nicky's giving them it's working.

only among mugs who have no idea how to rate horses, some of us have been banging on about him being a top notcher for quite some time - I think the 'not much cop' idea came from his novice hurdle season where he was badly campaigned (ran against the older horses in the International then no prep race for the Supreme which we know is a death knell to your chances in that race)

Cue Card has won twice at the Festival (pissed up both times), ran second to SS in the Arkle and Melling and got beat a nose by the Gold Cup winner giving him 7lbs. He is an absolute top notcher. 180 at least

and Sprinter Sacre total blew him away
