Kauto Star........the first horse to regain the GC not getting a mention until 10?

1.KS
2.And generous tbh Arkle.
Report Well Chief March 15, 2013 11:45 PM GMT
Surely Kauto Star winning the Gold Cup the 2nd time was better then Denman win and Best mate 3 wins while one being very impressive, he didnt really beat anything of true brilliance.
Report GEORGE.B March 15, 2013 11:46 PM GMT
By what criteria are we defining the top 10?

Official rating?
Timeform rating?
Popularity? - in which case 'Dessie' would be number 1.
The rating they achieved on the day?
'Durability'? - in which case Best Mate would have to be included as a 3-times winner.

Report GT-MOLE March 15, 2013 11:47 PM GMT
And btw Dessies GC was all the more admirable for all the factors against him.

Nortons Coin does not..........should not figure in any top 20...........The Thinker only just verges on the top 20.

Dawn Run has to be without doubt in the top half..........imvho.Plain

Purely imo Best Mate won 3 bad renewals.
Report Mustapha Bath March 15, 2013 11:54 PM GMT
Denmans win was superb... Perfection.
Most impressive Gold Cup win in the last 30 years IMO...
Not just who he beat, it's how he beat them!!
Report GT-MOLE March 15, 2013 11:56 PM GMT
How many bad renewals since Arkle SS?

All of them if his supporters were asked...............FACT is he beat fewer horses in his whole career than Best Mate/Dessie and KS did in plenty of individual races?
Report GEORGE.B March 15, 2013 11:58 PM GMT
That may be true, salmon spray, but still a commendable effort to win the race 3 times. And perhaps he didn't beat much, but he was imperious when he won it the second time. When he surged to the front 3-out, that was proper hairs stand up on the back of the neck stuff, imo!
Report ebulGery March 16, 2013 12:02 AM GMT
That was because he was so superior
He would run in hcps carrying 12-7, most of the rest would be carrying 10 stone..he would still win
there was not a lot of point in them turning out against him at level weights

The best generation of chasers EVER was born in the same year as Arkle
Mill House
Buona Notte
Dunkirk
What A Myth.
The latter won the Gold Cup at 12. At 9 he failed to beat Arkle when in receipt of 33lbs.
Report GT-MOLE March 16, 2013 12:16 AM GMT
Rose tinted specs SS and not decrying your memories or opinion.

Even Timeform are looking back with trepidation at their ratings and re-evaluating Flat and Jumps.

I have always questioned them as has Brigust......mostly flat for him.

For me Arkle had little to race against bar his own stable......a poor era and poor opos.
Report salmon spray March 16, 2013 12:19 AM GMT
I take it you never saw Mill House or Dunkirk Moley.
But the idea of Arkle losing to the likes of Imperial Commander or indeed Long Run at level weights is laughable.
Report Well Chief March 16, 2013 12:20 AM GMT
Even though a average gallop, I thought today's Gold cup was one of the best in the last 10 years, Cape tribulation is a decent chaser in the mould of a neptune Collonges and he never at any point looked like he had a chance, not because he didnt run his race, the big four all are very decent chasers and each one of them was coming into the race having won their last race, watching Bobs Worth run up that hill on ground that wouldnt have been his most ideal, suggested to me that you have to be a exceptional horse to beat him and you would imagine he will take all the beating next year as well having only had one run this season which is far from ideal.

One question for you. Given his small little frame, how long can that heart of him keep him at the top?? Katchit won a champion hurdle and never was a same, Bobs worth has won 3 festival races, but being all heart doesnt keep you at the top for that long, much more impossing figures will break that heart, however in terms of the last 10 years, has any other winner beaten a better field?

Correct SS I never witnessed them live but I did see plenty live since. Not only that I started my own handicap based on Timeform ratings for betting purposes and it did not take long to realise they were completely and utterly wrong with Arkle and his opos.

Fairly put Well Chief............Katchit had a lot of niggling injuries post the CH (tipped for the CH on here btw).

Bobs Worth is a more robust horse and will not be subjected to the rigours Katchit was.Stature and size guarantee nothing when it comes to race horses.

Cast your mind back to "The Golden Era" for hurdlers.Monksfield had his nose bloodied a few times but on HIS day this little pony destroyed possibly one of the strongest ever fields assembled for the CH.

Nothing like that SS,horse racing is as far as I know the only sport where participants are rated according to weight, distance and going.

Jim Clark was the greatest ever F1 driver imo............but you probably have your own opinion.

The difference is that the Timeform ratings were formulated by individuals and their own opinions at the time,a very poor time imo as far as competition among chasers was.
Report GT-MOLE March 16, 2013 12:49 AM GMT
BTW Howdi,if KS,Dessie or Dawn run ever were asked to give weight to the standard of opos Arkle did they probably would have managed it admirably.

I've watched the last 35 Gold Cups and even if the horse isn't a personal favourite, it's IMPOSSIBLE to exclude Imperial Commander!

I believe Denman is the most tailor-made chaser for the Gold Cup C&D I've seen in the last 35 renewals, and NTD's crack chaser seemed to beat him fair & square, though it's possible Denman wasn't at his brilliant best that day.

Whatever way it's juggled, Imperial Commander ran out of his skin on that occasion and at his very best, he was one of the greats for me, though sadly we didn't see it often enough.
