If Festival only, would be
Memorable - Pearlyman in the 1987 Champion Chase Painful - Mac Vidi finishing 4th in the 1980 Gold Cup Profitable - Rough Quest in the 1995 Ritz Club Chase |
|
By:
Very true about jumping zealot...........can you or anyone else remember the name of the horse that fell either twice or 3 times in the Champion Chase at the same fence in consecutive seasons. If memory serves......orange or red colours, was mostly unfancied but travelling really strongly each time...........either the "old" 3rd last or 2nd last fence.Had he stood up his name would have been on at least one QMCC trophy imo............could be miles out here but Vince Slattery ring a bell as the jockey?

Latalomne.

Vinny Keane the jockey...........at least I got the first name right.lol
![]() |
|
By:
Was Vinnie Keane on board I think, can still see him punching the ground the second year.
Shame there wasn't much i/r on here then, was on for absolute fortunes. |
|
By:
unsinkable boxer for me was on at 9 to 2 early morning price can see it yet pulling double at the top of the hill
|
|
By:
Obviously hard to say he would definitely had won but imo he would have been very very close.I had no financial involvement but felt gutted for connections, must go down as one of the unluckiest ever festival horse.
|
|
By:
Pendil '74....ouch!
|
|
By:
Memorable - Champleve in the photo finish that went on for about half an hour
Painful - Rhinestone Cowboy almost put through the rails by Pizarro |
|
By:
Dont remember the race mandarin as I was only starting to get an interest in betting and racing in general as a pastime despite being brought up with family having racehorses.Do remember a couple of years later a colleague talking about it as we tried to sort out the festival, cost him dearly.
In fact it is down to him that the game became an obsession,he put me onto Night Nurse for the CH and I punted half a weeks wages on him.Come the day he was nearly crying when Night Nurse drifted because of the rain (like a barge),I didnt really grasp why he was so upset. The rest as they say is history,I was paid 15/2..........he collected at about 11/4.So he got back some of his Pendil losses. He was also big on backing John Cherry for the CH which obviously cost him and I can never forget his tale of winning a huge amount of money on Lanzarote and his devastation when the horse was killed. Those horses were probably what cemented my passion for racing despite only really Night Nurse being my own personal involvement. The power of the Festival? ![]() |
|
By:
Poor old Pendil, touched off by The Dikler and then brought down by High Ken, just wasn't his race or Fred Winter's come to that, even though Midnight Court broke the hoodoo, for many it still doesn't really count because it was rearranged and run in the April, the history books show it though.

By:
Cyborgo in 95. Got well beaten by Dorans Pride in the end costing me a lovely double with Master Oats

Memorable would either be Jodami's Gold Cup having backed him ante-post and kept the faith after he somehow managed to lose the Hennessy with no weight...never touched a twig that day....or Monkerhostin's Coral Cup win...dont think i've ever been so confident a horse was going to take all the beating in a big-field hcap and panned out perfectly (My Way de Solzen's World Hurdle win also pleasing having taken 40+ on here off those who presumed he needed winter ground)
Painful would be Maljimar getting chinned by McCoy on Wichita Lineman after going 1.08 IR or something and Carberry overdoing the waiting tactics on Psycho in the County Hurdle...had 14s or 16s ante-post and went off 5s fav i think...should have won a minute They all seem quite recent....either the memory is going or the pain/euphoria of earlier Festivals has faded away! |
|
By:
just looking at some old Festival results, i see Polar Red was sent off 2/1 fav for the 2002 County Hurdle on the back of his Imperial Cup win....with hindsight, he should have been 10x those odds in a match with the eventual winner Rooster Booster rec just 1lb! Pipey certainly had them running scared back then
|
|
By:
Direct Route,Chmpn Chase,also Maljimar who
were both chinned by McCoy specials. |
|
By:
Most memorable moments would be watching Kauto Star and Desert Orchid out jump there competitors
with grade one jumping finesse to secure easy victories. ![]() |
|
By:
Most memorable - The Thinker winning the gold cup in the snow and Pearlyman (i loved that horse)
Most painful - Strands of Gold when trained by Jimmy Fitz being touched off by Cross Master and Le Coudray in the stayers - really should have won. |
|
By:
Most Memorable - Inglis Drever winning his first World Hurdle, had never been more confident about a horse finding masses of improvement up in trip, and backed accordingly - payed me back (and then some) for my biggest ever festival loss a year earlier after backing him in the Neptune
![]() Most Painful - Largest bet of the festival that year went on Straw Bear in the opener, this would completely shape how the rest of the festival went for me. Couldn't believe how well he jumped / travelled throughout, kicking on round the turn, only for "The Champ" to slow to a walk coming to the last (and stil made a mess of it), pulled away again when challenge....until Noland stormed home up the hill to collar him on the line, felt physically ill for about an hour afterwards ![]() |
|
By:
worst pocket wise and a similar bet to you glen had the singles doubles and treble but the acca
, by a long chalk gold cup 2010 had 3 winners and almost 24k running on to cooldine at 16s ante post had made the gold cup between cooldine and imp commander and picked the wrong one !imp commander 20s at the time i put the bet on ! best pocket wise synchronised last year gold cup |

Most painful will always be Moon Over Miami getting done by Oh Crick in the Grand Annual. Me and my friend, a cheltenham punter newbie had it in doubles , big ew singles, all rates on betfair 42 downwards and went from sheer ecstasy to Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo once the last was taken. Even though it lost it was one of the most fun and exciting races i have ever watched, and God knows what people thought who were walking past my house that afternoon. So busy jumping up and down that forgot to lay it off in running.
![]() The Best ? . There are alot of them, but last years Grand Annual was nice ,as i had done me Gonads and had about £63 lying around in various accounts. Que am amazing ride by Paul Carberry. 20/1 and over a grand in various accounts allowed me appreciate the 4 day journey i had just been on. "It ain't over till its over" ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Most memorable and most profitable : Hors La Loi III @ 66/1 Champion hurdle 2002, mixed emotions cause the death of Valiramix.
|
|
By:
Valiramix was a painful one for me having backed him A/P for months leading up to the race. Istabraq had already been pulled by the 3rd flight, so I thought 'this is the day'. It was a very sad sight to see Val' depart when travelling so easily and even more sad that he paid the ultimate price. How good could he have been.

My most painful memory at the Festival was in the 1986 Gold Cup. I'd had a decent bet on Wayward Lad and thought he had the race in the bag halfway up the run-in. Then the old horse's legs began to wobble and Jonjo switched Dawn Run to the outside and she came with a devastating late run to snatch the prize. Wayward Lad gave his all as usual but it just wasn't enough. Tragically the mare lost her life at Auteuil a few months later. Great memories of a great Gold Cup.

Get Me out Of Here. Supreme Novices 2010.
Btn head - after being hampered. Would have got up and won on the usual long run in - but this year they had moved the final hurdle nearer the winning post !!Stood to win a fortune ![]() |
|
By:
Memorable - Being there to see Best Mate win his third Gold Cup and doing the Alderbrook/Master Oats double.
Worst - Cybrandian getting collared by The Thinker in the blizzard. We were all on at huge prices. |
