£40,000 Ascot race proves Tom Garner's biggest ever win

HOT conditional jockey Tom Garner is in danger of becoming too successful.
On Saturday at Ascot, Garner took his current sequence to four wins in his last five rides.
And he did so in style, landing by far his biggest victory in the televised £40,000 Betfair-sponsored hurdle on the Nick Gifford-trained Kuilsriver.
Garner, 22, needs just three more victories before he loses his 7lb allowance – the ability to ride with 7lb less than the horse’s allotted weight to compensate for inexperience.
Garner’s boss Oliver Sherwood has already told the junior jockey that he must limit the number of rides he takes in the next few weeks so the 7lb claim remains in place when he partners Rouge Et Blanc for the stable in the Pulteney Land Investments Novices’ Handicap Chase on the opening day of the Cheltenham Festival next month.
Rouge Et Blanc heads to Cheltenham in tip-top form after winning at both Huntingdon and Exeter already this month, with Garner in the saddle on each occasion.
He can also look forward to the Cheltenham ride on Saturday’s winner Kuilsriver after an involuntary change of tactics prompted the gelding’s 33-1 triumph at Ascot.
Kuilsriver could run in either the Coral Cup on the Wednesday of the Festival or the Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Hurdle, the penultimate race on the Friday.
“I was meant to sit handy and come with a late challenge,” said Garner, a former pupil at Farmor’s School in Fairford when he lived in Down Ampney.
“No one wanted to make the running and basically the horse took me up to the lead at the fourth flight. He seemed to be enjoying himself so I did not want to disappoint him.”
Even after making much of the running, Kuilsriver was strong enough to hold off the challenge of another outsider, Sadler’s Risk, by half a length on the run-in.
Garner now hopes he can kickstart a career which has thusfar been plagued by injury.
Even after joining Sherwood in August on the recommendation of his former boss Warren Greatrex, Tom had only been in the post for two weeks when breaking his collar bone for the fifth time.
“I have to admit I was getting down recently when I was losing rides during the snow, but I have come through that now,” he said.
“I have two good rides to look forward to at Cheltenham and I am also excited by Tamarina Bay, who won by 28 lengths on her debut at Bangor the other day. She now goes for a Listed mares bumper race at Sandown.”

Would have thought carrying on riding for Sherwood would do the trick.
hope he's allowed to use one of them up today on Majorca King....
Maurice Linehan has similar issues at Jackdaws..not allowed take any outside rides..he is in a better position than garner longterm but only if he is been groomed to take over as stable jockey when McCoy retires..its not easy been good at what u do and been restricted..stuck between a rock and a hard place..protecting young jocks can have the opposite effect and is a dangerous game to play..the sport needs these good young lads coming through..it seems to be the oppostite on Flat..get the most out of them for as long as you can..jockeys like Kieran O Neill who were all the rage 2 seasons ago with a claim,now he struggles after losing it..Robert Tart looks the part at the moment,the best flat apprentice by a mile..has the noose and the style..Darren Egan will be interesting this season..he should still get plenty of rides...but what happens when he loses that claim..
Evan Williams did the same thing with Donal Fahy and, from being one of the most promising claimers around, look where he is now...
This by far the best policy for any young conditional/apprentice if they get chance to stick to one decent yard. Its so easy for them to get excited riding winner after winner for a string of modest trainers hell bend on exploiting a claim for the benefit of themselves. The whole 10lbs , 7lbs issue is causing more problems then ever before for these young kids , its clearly too big an advantage nowadays and its starting to make a mockery of our handicapping system.
ykickamoocow they are pretty loyal to Richie McLernon , Maurice should not be in any rush to move o or indeed charge through that claim. Reckon JP give him a Festival handicap winner this year.

knowing the 2 lads personally i agree,maurice is from my hometown,he has plenty of time and just needs to keep doing what he does best and he will be fine.i witnessed John Joe bring along Tony Dobbin in a similar way..he didnt do so bad...

Agree ykickamoocow. Obviously conditional/apprentice following is something i do avidly and indeed a large percentage of my punting is now based around them and imo Maurice is easily top of the pile and if he takes if slowly could easily be primed for AP's boots.
Its difficult to cut through the 'hype' surrounding kids , with ATR daily promoting the latest 'wonderkid' but most are set to fail. The whole point is they don't need 'promoting' while they take of 7lbs , they're hot property and the likes of Mick Fitz's doing more harm then good to any long term career aspects they hold.
With regards Robert Tart I fear the worst , yes agree clearly great horseman but still very weak and a long way off the finished article. You wouldn't put him up at 3lbs instead of a strong experienced jockey at the moment i wouldn't think and he's racing through the claim far too fast.
Ron now has Gary Philips to 'exploit' erm I mean help start a career - be another one next season for sure.

harry challoner in same predicament at the moment ,trainer desperate to keep his 5lb for the big races in the spring....but hardly gets any rides now despite excellent strike rate.
