We all know how much these FOBT's are affecting the over the counter turnover of the High St bookmaker ; having worked in the industry and kept in touch with people still in the business I am fully aware that some shops are taking more in the machines than they do in actual bets. Well I was interested to read the following.
' Paddy Power had a licence application refused under the 2005 Gaming Act section which states that 50% of Turnover must come from over the counter bets.
We have all been in shops where the FOTB’s are being pumped full of money all day long. In a quiet shop I would be extremely surprised if betting turnover exceeds the turnover of the fruit machines. In the official accounts of William Hill and Ladbrokes the machines make a profit averaging almost £1000 a week. Note, that is profit.
Next time you have a bet turned down by your local Bookies. Tell them you will be objecting to their licence as 50% of their Turnover is not coming from over the counter bets.
It might not work , but you can be guaranteed they won’t like it.

I know many of us ( myself included ) are often restricted when trying to place a bet with a High St bookmaker - BUT - and I ask the question ; If punters who are regularly getting knocked back actually object to a bookmaker's license on the grounds that they may not be taking 50% turnover in over the counter bets then would the bookmaker be forced to readdress the situation. I know having spoken to my manager of my local bookie ( one of the big two ) that his machines turnover is around 60 to 65% of his shop take and he is regularly turning punters away who want a bet ( and I'm not just talking about your pricewise stuff ) ; only yesterday a guy wanted £200 on a horse @14/1 and was offered just £25 ........ food for thought anyway - would any of you consider objecting to a license yourself ?? I know I would.

I have visited a few shops recently and I cant see anyone either betting on horses or even finding the Uk racing
as they are bombarded with foriegn and virtual racing, plus the bookmaker owned and controlled greyhound racing with effectively dead markets as no one is at the stadiums as the prices are controlled by the bookmakers. How ever the casino machines in the corner are manned though not as much as the past and a lot of the players seem to be very young indeed? |

He must run a hell of a busy shop then because an average shops machines can easily turnover anywhere between £20k- £30k per day |

They are one step ahead. Don't forget Labdrokes shop staff take telephone bets now and have done so for 2 years if memory serves. These bets count towards OTC stakes. Devious.

My heart goes out to the general public and the BHA as thanks to lame legislation the bookmakers are allowed
to operate as effective casinos on high streets and then turn around to the BHA and say we only took a tiny percentage of trade from UK horse racing when they wont even take a bet in most cases over £100! The farming of addictive type gamblers and levy avoidance has kicked into over drive thanks to the bums in seats of power! |
