BBC Radio announces new four-year horse racing coverage deal

BBC Radio is to continue its coverage of live horse racing until at least 2016, starting with this year's Cheltenham Festival.

Respected broadcaster Derek Thompson is to join the BBC Radio team for the four days of racing from 12-15 March.

Radio 5 live and 5 live sports extra's Cheltenham coverage will ensure that all 27 races are broadcast live.

The new four-year deal will cover major race meetings from Britain and overseas.

BBC Radio's Cheltenham coverage will be enhanced by the addition of 1998 Gold Cup-winning jockey Andrew Thornton, along with Paralympian and broadcaster Kate Grey.

There will be live text commentaries every day of the Cheltenham meeting on the BBC Sport website, including audio streams of all the races, and a comprehensive results service.

"We're really looking forward to the Cheltenham Festival, when the whole station gets involved to bring all the action, atmosphere and excitement to listeners. I'm also delighted to welcome Andrew, Derek and Kate to our team," said Jonathan Wall, acting controller of BBC Radio 5 live and 5 live sports extra.

"The sport has always been a core part of BBC Radio 5 live's output and 2013 will see more great coverage led by the best commentary team in the business: Cornelius Lysaght and John Hunt.

"The comprehensive radio coverage combined with the wide reach of BBC online and mobile will deliver excellent coverage of the sport to audiences."

Richard FitzGerald, chief executive of Racecourse Media Group  , added: "The BBC has been an outstanding partner in promoting British racing over the years and the sport looks forward to continuing this valued relationship, via the BBC's radio, online and TV news coverage."

I shall tell you another thing about Tommo: when I was last at Fontwell it was a family day or something like that. Tommo was there and was working the crowd BRILLIANTLY. He must have put several hundred extra on the gate in my opinion. People were coming up, having their photos taken, having autographs signed and he was joking about, being really nice to everyone and they were patting him on the head/back. Horse racing needs people like Tommo to make it more and more popular. He also puts people on the gate at Newmarket/Yarmouth when he commentates I think.
Report Gordon63 February 18, 2013 7:49 PM GMT
yeah family days are his thing - the fact he annoys and irritates the everyday racegoer seems to have gone un-noticed by first C4 and now the national broadcaster - amazing!! pn the same level as persad/parrot so overall the bbc coverage on radio will be just as bad as on tv!  tommo adds the square root of f all to the the popularity of horse racing and the one bright spot in this is hopefully radio 5 take him away from all the scottish courses where he regularly performs his high paid clown act

Will be better listening to Thommo on the radio than the dross that is now 4. Even my other half could see how much they missed Franks and Big Mac last weekend. Programme has lost its soul. Alice is a breath of fresh air by the way. Fortunately I've got RUK otherwise I'd be thinking about jumping off a cliff and that is before the prime time summer presenters get on air. How are the figures stacking up?
Report Hound-Dog-2 February 18, 2013 8:06 PM GMT
^ agree, thought Alice was very good presenting the programme,  "lost its soul"  I think one problem at the moment they haven't got a really strong character on the team.

Thommo is like Lazarus. Dont care what anybody says he is good for the game. Hound .. seriously it is like pulling teeth. No chemistry and no nothing and presenters some of whom seem to be over egging the cake and probably feel under pressure and boy oh boy does it show.

nothing more than a labour mouthpiece, especially in Scotland where the organisation is stuffed full of labour parasites.  Angry

aberdonia - i'm from 'your' part of the world originally, so care to explain how when it actually comes down to it, aberdeen north and south always return labour MPs? and how aberdeen county council ran up some of the biggest deficits imaginable - so much that my sister and friend of my mate both had their health treatment (surgeries) out sourced to glasgow and dundee - areas nowhere near as 'awash with money'!!

Report aberdonia February 18, 2013 8:52 PM GMT
Aberdeen council run up huge deficits  under the labour party.  It took years to sort out what those anti business buffons did to the city.

the labour party are dead  the north east, their vote at wastemonster level is an anti tory vote rather than any positive vote for them.  In the north east as a whole, spotting a labour voter is as rare as spotting a haggis roaming the hills.

Scarily, they are back in at local level on a one issue campaign despite not getting the most votes, so you can guarantee that they will mismanage the city's finances again.

The north east saw through the labour party years ago, wont be long before the rest of Scotland follows.
Report aberdonia February 18, 2013 8:59 PM GMT
one other thing, Glasgow gets nearly twice the money per head of population from govt as Aberdeen and Aberdeeshire as well as the rates collected from our thriving business' being put into a national pot and then given to Glasgow and Lanarkshire.

In essence we subsidise these labour voting soviets in the central belt. They get their public sector jobs and poverty and in return Westminster can spend Scotland's huge resources as these people vote labour in their droves.

And those Labour gravy train politicians let it happen.  As i said, keep them poor, stupid and needy.
