i only live ten miles from this place, and i have heard rumours of a local trainer who has sent horses there, any trainer found doing this should lose his licence forever,it might cost a few precious pounds but surely its better to have the horse destroyed humanely ,than to sell it for £200 to places like this.

I would be too frightened to look. How can anyone own a horse and resort to that.

Are the pics disturbing.
Report Makybe_Diva January 19, 2013 9:42 PM GMT
Yes, they are awful.

I caught a glimpse of them and read some of the text when scrolling through the Daily Mail website. I didn't need or want to look closer.

I'm fighting to keep the image of one poor horse out my head. It's probably the most disturbing and upsetting incident involving a horse that I have ever known.

Disgraceful that any animal should end up in a place like this.

The Food Standards Agency and the RSPCA have launched investigations into an abattoir after undercover footage revealed shocking abuse and neglect of horses.

The footage also shows allegedly illegal procedures when slaughtering horses destined for European food markets. Two slaughtermen have had their licences withdrawn as a result, the food watchdog said.

The film was taken at the Red Lion abattoir near Nantwich, Cheshire, after an eight-week investigation by the Hillside Animal Sanctuary.

It comes amid public anger that some of the biggest supermarket chains, including Tesco, have been selling beefburgers and other products containing horse meat.

The abattoir footage shows horses being beaten with sticks, a rope or an iron rod to encourage them into pens. Some are crammed into the slaughter pens in pairs and on one occasion in a group of three, and are then stunned together.

Under the Welfare of Animals Regulations 1995, horses should not be slaughtered in sight of one another because of the distress it causes.

Craig Kirby, FSA head of approvals and veterinary advice, said: "I was shocked by the footage and that is why we took immediate action to make sure the individuals involved could not continue to slaughter animals. The FSA takes animal welfare at slaughter very seriously, and we will always investigate and take action when we see breaches of the legislation."

The FSA is investigating further with a view to a potential prosecution.

Wendy Valentine, founder of Hillside Animal Sanctuary, described conditions at the abattoir as "really traumatic".

"It was just so harrowing and horrifying," she added.

An RSPCA spokesman said: "The footage is shocking and upsetting to watch. With the Welfare of Animals (Slaughter or Killing) Regulations 1995 in mind, we have concerns that horses appear to be in the stunning pen at the same time rather than individually, as the law requires.

"We also have concerns about some of the animals that appear to be injured. We have requested a copy of the unedited footage with a view to investigating."

Red Lion told Sky News that it treats animal welfare and public health with paramount importance.

"In attendance at the Red Lion abattoir are three full-time food standards officers comprising of an official veterinarian and full-time meat hygiene inspectors throughout production," it said in a statement.

The incidents in the footage are "not the norm but of an isolated nature", it added.

The abattoir said it has taken disciplinary action against the individual featured.

Its statement said: "I agree horses should individually enter the stunning area and most certainly not three at a time. However, small horses and ponies having spent years together as companions are difficult to separate. Horse lovers would understand that.

"My opinion and that of other veterinarians is it is better to keep those types together to reduce the stress, providing swift dispatch is achieved."

The abattoir said its meat was not part of the recent supermarket burger scandal.

Absolute scum. Small minded cowardly men who take their own shortcomings out on defenceless animals. None of them should escape punishment or retribution for their evil acts. Trainers sending live animals to a place like that should look at themselves very closely and if they are happy with their actions they should give in their licenses as they are not in a profession where they will ever be happy.

have not looked at any pictures and don't intend to, no doubt this is a continuing theme of horsemeat in the human foodchain and is intended to shock ,none of my comments were concerning mistreatment .

to put thoroughbreds on a pedestal and suggest they should be slaughtered in a more compassionate  fashion than any other of the 100,s of thousands of chickens, goats, sheep, pigs or cattle that are killed on a daily basis in the uk is fanciful  and is designed to shock .

of course any cruelty to animals is unacceptable ,but slaughtering is slaughtering and i would doubt the average sheep is afforded much compassion at the abattoir.

if people feel that strong about horses they should look for some sort of system that means the last  OWNERS of a horse have the responsibility of what happens to it when it becomes surplus to requirement and perhaps something could be done but its all about money .

there is enough human suffering in the world without looking to see how our food is killed and  play the outraged card ...all Halal meat is killed by cutting of the throat is this acceptable ?  kids are dying in Africa of starvation whilst we in the west throw away half our food so dont preach to me about suffering .
Report the dealer January 20, 2013 3:50 PM GMT
fact of life it happens but in a so called civilised country like this they deserve to die with a bit of compassion and dignity. my issue was with you making a joke about it without watching it, its about the beating and miss treatment before they die.

what it has to do with what is happening in the world is beyond me or maybe an admission you were wrong.

I dont want to see this film . But what does everyone think happens to ex/failed race horses . Far to many to be re-homed .Deep down i think everyone knows alot of horses and greyhounds are slaughtered after there days of entertaining us are over . But if anyone can afford to set up a retirement place for these animals it would be nice . P S there are charities that do help these animals but as i said far too many horses leave the sport ,

When God created the horse He said to the magnificant creature: I have made thee as no other. All the treasures of the earth shall be between thy eyes. Thou shalt cast mine enemies between thy hooves, but thou shalt carry my friends upon thy back. The saddle shall be the seat of prayers to Me. And thou shalt fly without wings and conquer without sword. O Horse. (I read this last week)

A creature who has served its owner to the best of its ability deserves a dignified end which does not involve ending up being killed inhumanely and then on to someones plate. A horse is domesticated just as cats and dogs are. A swift change of law is required. If you can afford to buy a horse then you can afford a vet to humanely destroy when its days are over.
