Here we go again. Tellwrong's cat and mouse guessing game part 18 (to be continued)

Conditions at the Merseyside venue are already described as heavy and although there is more rain on the way, clerk of the course Kirkland Tellwrong is hopeful he fixture will beat the elements.

Tellwrong said on Friday morning: "We had 15 millimetres of rain on Thursday but we would be fine to race today. We could get up to 18 millimetres on Saturday but I'm optimistic we'll be racing.

"I think by 7am we'll have had some of the rain, but hopefully we'll be fine to race and we'll try to stagger through an unpleasant day as best we can."

"Hopefully we can get all the works party's into the bars before calling it off"

I'm on Merseyside and it's just torrential rain at the moment with no sign of it letting up.

As long as it's raining they'll race.Ground will obviously be like a quaqmire but as long as it's safe for the hosses they'll get through the meeting. They've got three weeks to put the ground right before the next meeting & by that time they could be under a foot of snow or frozen off.Office parties etc.(good spenders)they ain't going to throw that away, also television money.
Report Swardean December 22, 2012 10:25 AM GMT
The way it is raining now, I would be amazed if they complete the card
Report Swardean December 22, 2012 10:26 AM GMT
Abandoned after 3 races IMO
Report jrw December 22, 2012 10:26 AM GMT
try 8 days next haydock meeting 30 dec sunday , you know your stuff allpoints
Report wasnot December 22, 2012 10:27 AM GMT
If they got through the entire card at Towcester on Thursday with standing water on the track then today at Haydock shouldn't be a problem.
Report mange December 22, 2012 10:28 AM GMT
mmm         has Haydock got hills in the track now
Report wasnot December 22, 2012 10:33 AM GMT
The point is that if they WANT to race, such as standing water doesn't seem to be a problem anymore.
Report allpoints December 22, 2012 10:45 AM GMT
Sorry about that one jrw.I certainly missed that one but I still think they'll race & complete the card.Too much money to throw away.Even in eight days time they may have no option but to call a meeting off this time of the year.As long as the horses are going through it & it's safe they may as well race.

The last 2 furlongs are upHILL all the way. Nap.
Report mange December 22, 2012 10:47 AM GMT
I did think it was a bit like Towcester
Report Big_Issue December 22, 2012 10:48 AM GMT
It's not standing water that's the problem, its whether they can actually take off or more importantly land at the other side of the obstacles (hurdle or fence) and stay on their feet, rather than aquaplane on landing. Haydock must be doubtful surely, the jockeys aren't there yet but they will be soon, then we might see a further series of inspections before abandonment.
Report wasnot December 22, 2012 10:50 AM GMT
Maybe its just me being cynical but whether courses abandon seems to have more to do with how many advance bookings they have.
Report mange December 22, 2012 10:53 AM GMT
Some "craic" on ere...........Youd struggle to get a orse to aquaplane.........
Report Early Morning Riser December 22, 2012 10:55 AM GMT
just bet the horses who's wearing the wellies Wink
Report Big_Issue December 22, 2012 10:56 AM GMT
Perhaps aquaplane was the wrong word, perhaps slithering would be a better word?
Report Swardean December 22, 2012 11:09 AM GMT
Interesting interview with Tellwrong.

Very keen to commit to start racing.  Less keen to commit to it finishing.
