A GAMBLER who viciously attacked bookies staff after losing his cash is facing a possible life sentence.

Mark Rutter, 39, stabbed one in the neck with scissors and punched another.

He lost the plot after playing a gaming machine.

CCTV showed Liverpudlian Rutter toppling the roulette-type machine in a William Hill shop in Dalkeith,
Midlothian, last August. It crashed into TV screens.

Rutter smashed a security screen and stormed into the staff area, demanding: “Give me my £200 back.” He tried to open tills before punching cashier Ryan Drummond on the head. He approached deputy boss Daniel Hardwick armed with scissors.

Richard Goddard, prosecuting, told the High Court in Edinburgh: “Mr Hardwick, fearing for his life, began pleading with the accused and shouted, ‘Don’t do it, don’t do it, mate’.”

But Rutter struck him twice on the neck with the scissors. One wound was potentially life-threatening because it was close to major blood vessels.

Rutter – who fled with £180 in notes and another £20 in coins – was found sitting on a river bank.

He admitted robbery and assault. Judge Lord Uist heard he’d been in Scotland visiting a girlfriend when the incident happened.

He called for background reports and remanded Rutter in custody until February

Be interesting to see what the background reports discover on this individual.

No doubt there are some on here who will try and have you believe he was a fine upstanding individual prior to this encounter with the big bad machines, and therefore should be absolved of all blame.

The man is scum and should be treated accordingly.

Mind you so are those who would try and use such a horrific incident for their own means in a forlorn attempt to get bookies to take their penny pinching bets.

Just another psycho in a country full of them. The UK is a breeding ground for such scum. It will no doubt be due to his upbringing ( no excuse) and the fact that the nutter has probably never worked in his life! I see it every day with lawless bstds who think they have some divine right to exist. Stuff the law, give me money for doing sod all, I didn't ask to be born so keep me! Start from the bottom with the biggest scrubbing brush and rid us of such individuals. The whole UK needs to be cleared from this vile type.

Saw a guy out in over 7 grand on one of these in my local billies, over 2 hours. The manager kept bringing him cups of coffee and asked would he like a snack.. I went over to the guy and said mate, give it up, the bookies are fleecing you get out whilst you can. He said I know they are as ive lost over 20k this week and so I need to win it back. When his cash ran out and he left, the manager was straight on the phone, laughing and giggling. I knew then that some people are just immoral. If anyone would have done this crime it should have been him, not over 200 quid.

This is a what is on a sign in all "Orals" shops next to the FOBT machines.

Machine Conduct

No more than two players at machine at any one time

No swearing

No hoodies to be worn

respect must be shown to others at all times

Any breaches of the above will result in the machine being turned off and offender asked to leave

Does this give an indication of the type of customer that may be found in these betting shops

denathorn,20 k down & trying to win it back against a computer generated machine that story makes me feel sick. All the staff are interested in in most bookies these days are selling competitions on these things to get people hooked.Last time i was in a bookies was about 3 weeks ago,to pick up a football coupon, all the manager was interested in was trying to get me to play a bingo game,he asked me three times in about 5 mins,in the end told him to **** off & leave me alone.

So the man who cracks up over Fixed Betting Terminals is scum and Clive's lot are not ? Had to laugh at Clive's comment at punters forlorn attempt at getting penny (pinching !! ) bets on in a bookies.Change the name then from bookies to Arcades.
Report clive82 November 29, 2012 4:02 PM GMT
Denathorn - are you suggesting someone who loses £20k in a bookies is within their rights to stab the staff in the neck? Is that just someone who has lost £20k on the machines or does the same logic apply to somebody who's backed Barca at 1/10 and done their conkers.

ladbrokes and betfred have fobt competitions tomorrow.
went in today and a middle aged man came in asking when the competition started. the cashier said is on 'all day'. excellent he replied. cant wait.
apparently u have 3 minutes to try and win as much as possible. the highest gets £50 'real play' on the machines.
such a sad situation.
same thing happened in corals the other day, people actually come in to ask when the next competition is on.

i on the other hand wanted to put 71/29 on a 10/1 shot and was told maximum of 25, the rest at sp.

I do feel sorry for people working in bookies now

and personally I would be glad if all non sports betting was removed

but I am sorry you cannot blame FOBTs for this..

it is a general problem of living in a more violent society

the causes of which go much deeper than this imo

to be more exact

FOBTs attract a more violent kind of customer into the betting shop

so in a sense you could argue FOBTs cause violence

but it is not the FOBTs.... it is  people who cause the violence

anybody who stabs someone in the neck with scissors

is an extremely dangerous and violent man...FOBTs or not

Cameron's 'Big Society' is kicking in soon and part of that is people on benefit will be given their money monthly not weekly and they will be given all of the money instead of housing benefit paid directly to the landlord, people are going to play these machines with a months benefit in their pockets and lose it all ...... families will be evicted because the addict cant help themselves and spends 'the rent',food banks will be overused cos they've spent the food money and kids will look like they have just come off a film set of Oliver cos they wont any money to clothe them .....step forward W@nga.com and ca$h converters etc to screw them even more ....

FOBTs attract a more violent kind of customer into the betting shop

I still think this is the real problem

The people who use these machine are not interested in the intricacies of the form in the 3.00 at Wetherby

or what will lead at Crayford in the next

they are there for the base thrill of gambling or just trying to make money for nothing

it is a much more primitive level and tbh a more primitive type of person

I really dont see your traditional horse/dog punter turning violent because of FOBTs myselfConfusedConfused

The bookies are attracting a different type of customer

and even football betting may contribute to this..although debatableConfused

so the old code of behaviour of punters no longer exists

It seems  betting shops now need bouncers more than settlersSad

I think there is a choice here...remove FOBTs will remove these type of punters

but will remove punters of course...a lot of the old type of punters bet on line now

so the choice is less FOBTs..less betting shops

more FOBTs more betting shops

people have to make their own decisionConfused

I never saw any violence or even threatening behaviour when I used to be in bookies in the 80s and 90s and I lived on a rough estate in Hull. There always seemed some sort of respect and when you lost big you just got that feeling in your stomach and went for a walk home. I visit a Billys now and hen just to scan the RP and 10 min in the place and I want to be away. Used to love a day in bookies.

Even in the early 2000's I used to love a day in the bookies, when I was barely old enough to bet. Everytime I go in there now it's mainly drug dealer types and general scum. I only go in if they're a bigger price than betfair and it's in and out for me.

Trust launches £500k Cat B machine study

November 30, 2012 by Simon Liddle http://www.intergameonline.com

The largest ever programme of academic research into Category B gaming machines has been announced today by the UK’s Responsible Gambling Trust.

Category B machines offer the highest stakes and prizes in Britain and are found in betting shops, bingo halls, adult gaming centres and casinos. The research has been commissioned to better understand how people behave when playing these machines and what helps people to play responsibly.

Marc Etches, chief executive of the Responsible Gambling Trust, explained that the majority of British adults that gamble do so without experiencing difficulties. Some, however, do have problems.

“There is significant consumer and political interest in Category B gaming machines,” he said, “but there is a lack of robust evidence about how people play on these machines and what helps people to stay in control and play responsibly.”

The £500,000 research programme will be the largest of its kind ever undertaken into gaming machines in Britain, he continued, adding that it will provide “high quality, empirically-sound and peer-reviewed research to inform future policy-making.”

The charity will begin its gaming machine research programme in January 2013 with the commissioning of the National Centre for Social Research to investigate machine-related data held by different gambling operators. The initial phase is expected to take six months.

"By its keenness to give researchers unprecedented access to gaming machine data and then to stand back from the research process, the industry has given a mandate to the Trust to commission research that will be rigorously objective and independent of the industry,” said Etches.” A panel of independent experts will provide the necessary academic oversight to underpin stakeholder confidence in both the quality and the objectivity of the research.”

The Trust expects to publish its initial analysis as early as June next year, although the overall research programme is likely to take 18 months.
