WONDERHORSE Frankel’s 14th win produced another historic event – punters refusing to collect winning bets worth £24,000.
They kept the tickets in the hope that they would be worth more as collector’s items in a few years.
The great horse crossed the Ascot line on Saturday at short odds of 2/11.
Not surprisingly, grateful bookies said their customers were making a shrewd investment by allowing them to keep the cash in the tills.
Ladbrokes spokesman Alex Donohue said: “The Frankel phenomenon is just exactly that – something unprecedented in racing history.
“For instance, a mint-condition race card from his first appearance on a track at Newmarket two years ago recently fetched more than £600 on eBay.
“And a copy of the Racing Post for the same day went for £50.
“Industry-wide, there are stakes of £20,000 placed on Frankel which have not been claimed. If someone has had a bet of £100 and is due to collect £120, they are thinking the ticket will be worth an awful lot more than that and it would be a better
investment to hold on to it.
“And given the recent pattern, they are right.
“It is not uncommon for people to collect football memorabilia, but this is the first time it has happened on such a scale in horse racing.
“If someone has a race card from Saturday, a Racing Post and a winning ticket on Frankel, what a treble that could prove to be.”
The Queen was in the crowd to see the four-year-old become horse racing’s Muhammad Ali – The Greatest – when he won the Qipco Champion Stakes.
Speaking in a whisper, his trainer Sir Henry Cecil, who is battling stomach cancer, said: “What a truly magnificent animal. He is the best I have ever had and the best I have ever seen.”
Frankel has now been retired from racing but will earn owner Prince Khalid Abdullah £100,000 a time in stud fees

a nice move by ladbrokes to try and convince punters not to collect their money.
folk placing bets on a saturday might not be able to go back to collect until one evening after work or even in some cases the following saturday, and it's not unusual for betting shops to be sitting on a monday with a lot of saturday's payouts still to be paid. |

Ffs, are these jokers for real? I've still got a ticket from Sat, and it's nothing to do with it ever being worth anything. More laughable PR from Ladbrokes, following on from the sh*te Ascot let that clown Williams spout in the racecard on Saturday. |

Great comments from punters who are sharper than the bookmakers,i honestly cannot beleive what i was hearing from ladcrooks,it seems like williams and his mob are on a crusade to self destruct total idiots.Not fair behind william hill total refusal to pay out on richard hughes top flat jockey until november 10 th,not good pr for a firm bordering on turning into a laughing stock!!!
