Silly me
![]() Its not the Chatam i have in the memory bank. Maybe i am mistaken. |
By:
Fred Rimell's Chatham won the first running of the Arkle Chase in 1969, and the mackeson in 1970.
Martin Pipe's Chatam ran in just about every big NH race going. I think he started by running about 3rd in a Triumph Hurdle, and finished up running in Grand Nationals, winning a Hennessey along the way. |
By:
sprowston boy was the horse gay kellaway rode to become the first female to ride a winner at royal ascot.
By:
sprowston boy was owned by a coal merchant who named the horse after the suburb of norwich where i/he lived.
By:
I think Chatham was installed an early favourite for the Triumph hurdle
By:
i should think coal merchants would still be kept busy around norwich

Wasn't THE DEMON BARBER trained by Gordon Richards?
By:
Sprowston Boy - what a memory!
Was in my novice years of betting at Uni and developing ratings for the first time. Remember Sprowston Boy getting beat one day and running no sort of race. As a mathematician it made no sense to me whatsoever and remember being pretty upset about it. All part of the learning curve! |
By:
The Demon Barber was trained by Gordon Richards. He ran only once in the 1985/86 season winning a bumper at Ayr. He ran 4 times in 1986/87 winning on 3 occasions - a bumper a Carlisle and novice hurdles at Wetherby and Perth.
By:
just looking at the list above and saw ARCTIC CALL
one of my all time favourite jumpers and I remember backing him one day at newbury when he won at about 9/1. think the colours used to pale blue with red(?) epaulettes. |
By:
Pink epaulettes Outpost
, really liked him too. |
By:
was the demon barber the horse of gordon richards who got electricuted ?
By:
I THINK THAT HORSE ELECTRUCUTED WAS THE GREY BOMBER
By:
thats the one huggy fav for the triumph hurdle at the time.
By:
thanks Fabulous
I was trying to remember the colours but can't even remember if I got the 9/1 price right for newbury as I backed the horse so often, but I do remember him winning there. one of my worst gambling days was when I went all in on him at Aintree and watched him coming clear of the field only for him and the jockey to part company at the last with the jockey finishing up flying over the rail. that was a bad punting day. |
By:
Sh1t, yeah remember that, that was on the Thu, must have been a sore one......for you and the jock.
By:
I remember Arctic Call being awarded the Anthony Mildmay, Peter Cazalet Memorial Handicap Chase at Sandown following the disqualification of On The Twist whose jockey, Adrian Maguire, incorrectly claimed 3lbs.
By:
Yes,Arctic Call was owned by Brian Stewart-Brown,a big punter at the time. Navy blue, pink epaulettes and cap. Also owned Large Action and several other good 'uns.
By:
was it arctic call who unseated osbourne at the last at aintree when he looked all over the winner ?
By:
That was the Martell Cup jimnast. He was a few lengths ahead of King's Fountain when he hit the last.
By:
the 1st time iever went racing was at perth in 1991 and the demon barber won the last race on the card. other winners that day were jinxy jack and jj henry. i never picked a single winner but still thought it was great seeing the horses i had seen on the tv.
By:
thanks pauli
fidway jinxy jack beat a horse i owned when he made his hurdling debut at carlisle in 1988. |
By:
Two great horses from Bailey's yard
The small tough Docklands Express The giant Kings Fountain (adored this horse) |
By:
Not being pernickety chaps, but it was Mark Richards who toppled off at Aintree. Would have been 1.02 going to the last on here.

Spot on Huggy.
![]() THE GREY BOMBER was a name on some people's lips yesterday, as the terrible scenes at Newbury brought to mind the death of the promising juvenile hurdler, writes Peter Scargill. Trained by Denys Smith, The Grey Bomber was electrocuted in a freak accident on the gallops in 1983. The winner of all his five races, including the Triumph Hurdle Trial at Cheltenham in December 1982, The Grey Bomber was described as potentially the best horse Smith had trained. But tragedy struck the four-year-old on his way to the gallops when he placed his foot in a puddle that had been electrified by cables blown loose by gales. "One of the hardest things I've had to do was ringing the owners to tell them the tragic news," Smith said. |
By:
your right beast osbourne rode the horse on all but two of his races.
By:
Thanks beast. It was Richards who unseated at Aintree. Arctic Call ended that season running a cracking race to finish 2nd to Topsham Bay in the Whitbread. That was a fantastic effort off top weight.
By:
correct beast - richards was riding at aintree and rose in the saddle approaching the last but the horse put down again for an extra stride and then as richards was going down, the horse was coming up and bumped richards right out of the saddle and over the side rail in amongst the few folk standing at the last fence.
that memory is ingrained in my mind although I got rid of the VHS video long ago. |
By:
A lot of my favourite horses were trained by Sherwood in that era. In no particular order,The West Awake,Rebel Song,Cruising Altitude,Large Action,Arctic Call. One of their best that sadly didnt get chance to fulfil his potential was The Breener, killed in a fall at Newbury i think.
By:
beast do you remember when warwick use to have that cracking midweek fixture, both rebel song and the west awake won on the card then next time out they won both sun alliance races at the festival.
By:
Yes,it used to be a cracking meeting. Ive got an inkling they took over from the Champion Hurdle trial from Nottingham, something like the City Hurdle, but it didnt ever really attract the top class horses at Notts. I think Aonoch may have won it once.
By:
Whilst on the subject of horses killed before fulfilling potential , was at Chepstow the day Deep Wealth suffered a fatal fall ( unless my mind is playing tricks )in the Sheikh Ali Abu Khamsin colours , fantastic potential
![]() Great thread ![]() |
By:
I remember backing Large Action ante post for the Champion Hurdle while Alderbrook was still a group flat horse being trained in Newmarket.
thought I was stealing money getting 10/1. |
By:
Going back even further, The Dikler, Spanish Stepps, Red Candle, those were the days horses tough as nuts
By:
beast putty road won at the fixture before going to the festival, not sure what happened to the nottingham race but royal gait won it before becoming the champion hurdler.
