I took the Mrs to a nice hotel - http://www.arts-hotel-paris.com/ - very reasonably priced (for Paris) in the arty/montmartre part - very close to Sacre Couer and an easy walk from eurostar. The rooms are small but that's typical of Parisian hotels - there's a nice local bar at the top of the road that does a decent happy two hours (trust me you'll be grateful for that) and theres a Paddy bar at the bottom of the road for all live sport. Montmartre tube is a golf shot away. This hotel is close to loads of restaurants, small supermarkets, bakers e.t.c. Nice cotinental breakfast in the morning - was very lucky to find it.

Not quite up to your price range but I think that Le Robinet d`Or is a fair shout. It`s within walking distance of Gare Du Nord and situated on the Canal Saint Martin, which has some pleasant nightlife options locally.

Plenty of decent hotels around Gare Du Mord but if you really want to treat her then the George Cinq is the way to go.

Don't go walking anywhere near the Gare Du Nord, it is a very dodgy area with resident muggers who prey on tourists. Forget Paris as it is over priced and over rated and try Bruges or Amsterdam they are much more tourist friendly

Forget the station area too dodgy.  Forget the Arc area to residential.

Stay around the saint germain area, best for bars, restaurants, social scene and good central location for the other sites

Depends how you are traveling - if by Eurostar(recommended) then ignore what Swardean has said and stay at the Hotel Terminus Nord (part of Mercure)
Very good ,in your price range and just across the road from the Station. Pay a little extra for a superior room and have a great time

Hotels in  Paris apart from the very expensive ones are dire. Full stop.

I've been to Paris loads of times and never had a problem once, it's a great city, one of the best in Europe imo.

One weekend we did The Arc, The Crazy Horse Saloon in the evening and stayed at the George V. It doesn't get much better than that.

Hotel Baltimore, Avenue Kleber - very nice - although Swardean is correct, to some extent, about the area around the Place de l'Etoile (Arc de Triomphe) being less 'happening' (but there will be enough nice restaurants in the vicinity).  His comment about the St Germain area being best for restaurants, bars, etc is correct. 

Montmartre for the more bohemian experience!

Stayed near Gare du Nord last weekend (purely on the basis we had a very early flight Monday, but have done in the past too)  - its not as bad as some are making out, not bad for a lads weekend, but not the best for going with the bird. North of the station really is a sh*thole though.

Would try and get somewhere near the Latin Quarter if poss. Stayed in the Hotel Design Sorbonne (or something like that last year) which was reasonably well priced and a decent location. Worth checking out if you can get in there.

wee eck's comment isn't far off the mark tbh, i've stayed in some right dumps there that were far from cheap.

If you want to impress your gf, Saint-Germain fits the bill. It's the University district (Sorbonne) in the Latin Quarter. There might not be Jean Paul Sartre types there anymore but it fits the English image of Paris, you'll be well situated, and it's friendly, unlike the area around the Gare du Nord (good for whoring) or the tourist trap that is Montmartre.

If you want to bring the price down push out slightly further to Montparnasse (going to the top of the tower is worthwhile) but definitely look to be on the Left Bank of the Seine.
