The worst buying money story I heard was from one of my dad's mates who had his own bookies. A guy walked in his shop in the mid 70's and wanted 1 grand on a 1/10 shot in a 2 runner race, he didnt want to take the bet but did in the end.

The 1/10 shot dug his heels in when the tape went up and was two furlongs behind when he decided to race, apparently the fav didnt lose by much in the end think he said about 10 lengths but the punter didnt leave his shop till 2 hours after the last race begging for his money back!!

I have had dozens of worst bets but one I remember in particular was at Ayr

about 30 years ago, at the time I had a connection in Thompson Jones yard

who rang me and said they were running a 2yo that in their reckoning was

unbeatable, anyway I had £2400 on it at 1-6 it got beat 8 lengths, I felt a

right nana I can tell you.

W.E.-----I wouldn't think that any 2yo travelling several hundred miles in a horse-box (possibly for its first run), is EVER an odds on shot,-- sorry you got clobbered.

And as for TGIB, well I thought that I had been a demented fool for most of my gambling life, but this guy takes the biscuit---( 100 million turnover,5 houses, etc. !)---however I wish I could know him , because I could sit and listen to his tales for hours on end, and perhaps amuse him with some of my own maniacal exploits !

SIR,Bond here is a true story re bad bets I dont know if it was the worst

bet the guy ever had but it was seriously bad, here goes around 20 years ago

before the days of betting exchanges a pal of mine went to a night meeting

at Catterick to back two horses trained by B.W.Hills whom he was assured were

virtually nailed on these animals ran in the 1st two races as far as I can

recall, the 1st one he covered to win at SP £2000 it got beat at 1-3, to recoup his

losses and show a profit he backed the 2nd one to win £8000 that also got stuffed.

Shortly after the 2nd horse had been beat I saw my friend

in the owners and trainers enjoying a glass of bubbly, sadly he died a year or two

later.  The bookie who took the bets still bets on the boards at Catterick, I saw

him there this Tuesday.   This is a very true story. good luck.

I laid a horse a year ago.  I watched it hit 1000 in running. Turned my laptop off....the next day I saw my BF account was low and the nag had only gone and won. That's a choker. I had the same experince when I bet under 6.5 goals in a chelsea game a couple of years back. Chelsea scored 3 times in last 3 minutes.

Here,s a positive tail that went wrong to start with.
At powderhall dogs many years ago my auld man got the message for a dog.Wedged up and having a right dash he went down early to nick a price looking for 2-1 the dog opened up at 9-2 which he grabbed greedily took a step back only to realise that he had backed the wrong dog(same litter first name the same). He went back to the bookie the uncle fester like Jock Love and asked the bookie to change it to the right dog but the bookie said "a bets abet" and refused to change it .So my auld man had to bite the bullet "the hares running "bang the 9-2 shot hit the lids never seen a rival to cries of eeeazy peazy.Whilst collecting his winnings the quote " a bets a bet ya big fat b.......Oh happy days.

' If you can't win ,you can't lose'
Applied to odds-on dead-heats and odds-on joint favs.

Kauto was a novice having it's second run over fences, it's not hard to see why people would think it was a mug bet.

I heard a story about some punter in the fifties who had an agreement with his bookie to have a grand on Gordon Richards' shortest priced runner every day. All was going well until he got beat on a 50/1 on shot.
