how does that bookie who stands in the middle at sedgefield make it pay

Seems to me, from the posts on here from track bookies that it's going the way of the pub trade. Huge increases in overheads and a declining customer base due to the lack of disposable income and poor value for money for racecourse punters.The fact that people can bet(drink) in the comfort of their own home compounds the problem. I used to visit the races weekly but struggle to justify the cost of a day at the races to watch what, in the main is very low grade fare, particularly midweek. Would be another case of biting the hand that feeds imo.

Never go anymore just won't pay the rip off racecourses, and it's not as if it ends there, often struggle to get odds comparable with on here and if get hungry or thirsty a second mortgage is required no thanx

Also go racing and get ripped off with the e/w terms.

all good points but no body has answerd the question why does the bookie stand there and pay exs
has he paid his petrol money to get their and cant stand in the main ring cause its full so pitches up

He is probably a compulsive gambler like a lot of bookies. Including me.

I have not used a racecourse bookmaker in years, either for horses or Greyhounds. Now we are used to a low margin product, the racecourses should run their own low margin t0tes and use the profits for cheaper admission & fairer food/drink prices to attract much bigger crowds.

The Bookmaker I believe you are refering to does not to my knowledge have his name on the Tatts list so even if there wasn't a bookie in Tatts he couldn't bet there.Yesterday there were loads of empty pitches in Tatts,there were only fifteen in Tatts & the number is about double that.If however the middle of the course was to close then his name(I don't know his number in the middle)would be added to the Tatts list as long as had a number withing the numbers in the middle & would go in front of all those out of the Tatts numbers at the moment.If he is only working from out of the numbers in the middle(which I hasten to add I don't think he is)he would be placed after those currently out of the numbers on the Tatts list.
As to how he makes it pay.He bets in the minor rings at quite a few(if not all)of the North Easr tracks & he has his regulars.True these rings are not very well attended but I believe his wife works with him,the badge fee & admission is sensible so if he gets it on his own he'll probably get a wage.I cann't however see it being viable if anyone else turns up to bet in there/

i was shocked to read there was only 15 standing in tatts
i used to love going racing to the northern jumping meetings from wetherby to kelso
i always thought the geographical the lay out of the ring at sedgefield
was the one where all the books had a similar fair chance compared to huge differential in pitch allocations at most courses
unfortunatley i'm not in very good health and dont get racing now
but it sounds as though in the winter months in midweek especially i might see a few tumbleweeds blowing past at a few courses on at the races and racing uk.

Fine day,stood 2.
15 books,crowd & results ave,money poor.
However I did show a profit.That fav. in the second I laid it from 10[11 down to 8/13 & stood it for a few quid.Last week when it ran it seemed to me that it wasn't putting it all in so it was one to take a chance with.Got a skinner on the result so Darby & Joan were out last night but that b llody wines expensive.She's been told that next time we go out she's back on the lime & soda.She even had the audacity to ask if we were going out for our teas,needless to say she was told to get in the kitchen.

I always kept to the golden rule when reporting in after a night at the dogs..either "won small" (if had done brains) or "lost small" if had had a winning turn....discovered very early on in marriage that this was the best course of action..

regarding your origanal question,ladies night at sedgefield last tuesday i thought there were tomany books in tatts so i went on my own in the middle,did 288 bets ,badge entrance £22 ,went in bath tatts saturday night did 199 bets badge entrance £162.

ribero it would be either derek wood or paul dolan,between us we always make sure theres one there to keep the ring open,pretty sure it was derek yesterday,the punters are ok in there all they wont is a bet and a cup of tea,the racecourse cant be bothered sending somebody over with a kettle and some milk and sugar,the punters even thank you when there leaving.obviously you wont be getting very rich in there but its still better than sitting on your arse doing nothing.

by the way in comparison with other thirsk saturdays how does tommorows compare ? no premier league football this week,not that,that matters in yorkshire

Yes it was Derek yesterday.
As for tomorrow it's usually quite a good crowd but like most Thirsk meetings results are hard to come by.
