To have two 1mile 6F races on the same day is plain daft the melrose could be on another day.

elisjohn

my thoughts also only went wednesday this year and that was only because frankel was running.

tuesday till thursday didnt miss a day in 20 plus years, now i dont miss been there at all.

wednesday proved if you give the people something to go for midweek they will still turn up.

Sorry chester is poor now aintree is still ok can they stop moving races to saturday.
Report knot in wood August 25, 2012 9:48 AM BST
anything over 2 days is a festival these days.

the whole fixture list needs a major revamp, look at this years classics in britain and ireland, they just another race now, take out camelot and you can hardly remember who ran in them.

i would move the derby and oaks from epsom, its a joke track.decent racehorses should not be allowed near the place.

and the "betfred ebor",just dont sound right..does it.
Report elisjohn August 25, 2012 11:46 AM BST
today i think there is 9 listed/ group races in uk, didnt realise till few minutes ago that the celeb mile at goodwood is today, wasnt that meeting the main fixture of the weekend , now seems with york on hardly noticed .

Sadly greed rules the world.
The 3days was a much better meeting.
This will be the 1st time i have attended the Sat Ebor, from what i hear from people in the hotel, it was a bit of a madhouse & there was a lot of trouble after the racing at night in York.Sad
Report ribero1 August 25, 2012 8:42 PM BST
Take frankel out of the equation and i'm sure you would be looking at less people than they got the last time it was a 3 day meeting midweek, the quietest saturday ever and it's ebor day ffs!
Report wonders August 25, 2012 8:54 PM BST
only went for first 3 days  shouldn t be dragged out over 4  its def lost its shine
Report Steamship August 25, 2012 9:51 PM BST
Why not run all the decent races Wed- Fri and Hcaps on the Saturday, if they have to use today.
Report intheknow August 25, 2012 10:06 PM BST
The Ebor meeting should never have been scheduled to end on BH Saturday as more people sure to be away on holiday. However, they were probably unlucky in the fact that the Rhinos were at Wembley and Yorks in the 20/20 finals at Cardiff. Those two events will have had a big impact on the crowd.

Having said that, the whole meeting is a shadow of its former self.
Report Nonaynever August 25, 2012 10:11 PM BST
Went for first time in 86' and it remained the only meeting i went to every year until this. Agree 100% with the op, its lost so much since going to 4 days, just didnt seem the same the last couple of years and decided not to bother this. Very sad, hope they have a re think but realise that's highly unlikely.
Report ribero1 August 25, 2012 10:12 PM BST
you reap what you sow, they will always face obstacles this saturday but the rest of the week has gone also.
Report CHOOL August 25, 2012 10:34 PM BST
Same as you Nonaynever, this is the first time in many years that I have not attended the Ebor meeting and to be honest I have not missed it as much as I thought I would. I actually cancelled my annual badge to York when they announced it would go over onto the Saturday and now I will only go for the Dante meeting. It's all about the money these days and unfortunately I see all the big meetings including Cheltenham and Ascot going into Sundays as well in the next few years. There will be next to no decent racing midweek and everything on Friday nights and the weekend. I used to love the Ebor meeting midweek as it was an occasion, same as the Derby on Wednesdays, there was nothing like it for a great day out. It was incredible the amount of people you used to get on the Downs, never to be repeated again. The fixture list as with things in racing is going in the wrong direction.
Report wasnot August 25, 2012 10:37 PM BST
The Ebor festival has always been a bit special.  Not got the buzz anymore, just a 4 day meeting rather than a festival.
Report ribero1 August 25, 2012 10:50 PM BST
rounded off with a 5 furlong apprentice handicap!
Report Cantthinkofaclevername August 26, 2012 2:13 AM BST
You know back in my day, nostalgia was so much better. Nowadays it seems so bitter.
In my day we never used to complain about the four day Derby Meeting even though 50% of the races were cr@p (the racing even included a seller!). Nowadays though we hate the new meeting because half of it is on a weekend. All right, I grant you, the quality of the races is much better but the meeting is at the weekend so it must be rubbish.
All major sporting events should be held midweek and companies should be forced to give people time off to watch them with full pay. There is just too much greed.
Report One Nation August 26, 2012 8:01 AM BST
I went all four days. Yesterday seemed very quiet in Members - the paddock was particularly spartan. Probably only about 100 saw Frankie jump off the winner after the Ebor.

The betting ring and grandstand on the other hand, was a bear pit of drunks. Without exaggeration, 90% of the people in it (excluding the bookmakers) had either a pint or a can in their hand.
Report saddo August 26, 2012 8:10 AM BST
They will never admit it but drunks are what they want, drunk people spend more.
Report ribero1 August 26, 2012 9:48 AM BST
In the post today they are washing over it all by keeping the emphasis on frankel and also stating they have no plans for a 7th race on the first 3 days.
Report mr crisp August 26, 2012 12:25 PM BST
on another post today adge is saying how quiet ebor day was for cash, average bet under £3-50
is that really any different from the way the racecourses look at it
x amount of pints sold average profit per head spend
all business's have to try to maximize profits based one what they have to offer
stag does hen partys and bus loads of drinkers from the pubs for a day out are now the sought after ones
saturdays are by far the most popular popular days for these trips out.
the after racing music concerts are another concept that the racecourses have brought in to get cash
it is now the punter that goes purely and simply for the enjoyment of the horse racing who is the odd one out . it is no coincidence that these festivals are stretched to take in saturdays, the courses see it as an essential businness practice.
lets all pray cheltenham doesn't go down the same road but would it be the greatest suprise if inside  a few years time a saturday running of the cheltenham gold cup takes place.

Meanwhile you have the Kempton Autumn Festival to look forward to on Wed,Thurs,Fri,and yes Sat.(5-8Sept).Plenty of class 5 and class 6 handicaps to get the pulse racing, plus freedom of movement with no massive crowds getting in the way,and no traffic jams.
Don't worry about the Sat clash with Ascot,it will mean even more room to move around.
Report unbiased August 26, 2012 4:28 PM BST
Of course starting tomorrow is the SIX DAY SURREY FESTIVAL,starting with 2 days @ Epsom, followed by 2 days@ Kempton, culminating with 2 days @ Sandown, all within easy reach of each other.
