I think there was a RICHARD CURRANT, don't remember much about JOHN CURANT.
Posed a question a few weeks ago about the width of stalls, do you have any idea what the measurements may be, Workrider? |

A little research suggests that John and R (Bob) Curant were brothers. One apprenticed to Boggy Whelan and the other to Tommy Gosling in the early 70's.
Think one of them rode for a number of years in Jamaica but can't recall which one. Not sure either of them rode lots of winners but they must have ridden a fair amount as I recall both names. Someone will know more!! |
By:
Bob Currant rode a few for Henry Candy back in the 80s,nice man.I think he is a White Flag Man at some Race Meetings nowadays.
|
By:
Capt John.........trained Devon way..........
|
By:
Hill ?????
|
By:
maybe onlooker will enlighten us...?
|
By:
L.G. BROWN rode for the easterbys mid to late 60s.
Eric Eldin, very fine jockey of the same era rode for Ryan Jarvis, both Jockeys were reliable and classy but completely over shadowed by the greatest of all mister Piggot. I have no doubt it was the golden age of race riding. |
By:
Isn't Lionel Brown still riding out for Etherington ?
|
By:
In 1973 Horses In Training
John Currant is listed in the 'Winning Jockeys' of 1972 - as having eidden 12 Winners from 149 rides. He is also listed a a 7st 6lb APPRENTICE (for 1973) to Ken Payne. Ken Payne is listed as having 'trained' ![]() Payne had 48 in training in 1973. |

|
By:
old time jockey from my school days called Garnie Bogourie excuse spelling rode for PPrentergast remember two great horses called noblesse and ragusa winning many races for him.
|
By:
he won the derby on ragusa i think , noblesse was a smashing filly for darkie ..
|
By:
Workie do you recall a jockey named Robert Edmondson?
|
By:
WORKRIDER, I expected you could find out the info, but 2.8 metres wide, that's about 9 feet
would have thought about 3.5 to 4 feet WIDE, not long. The reason I ask is I wondered how far MOONLIGHT CLOUD travelled to her left to finish nearer the rail at ROYAL ASCOT and then lost by a head, she was guided from stall 5 to the nearside rail, where BLACK CAVIAR was drawn 15, in THEORY stall position 17 because RESTIADARGENT, THEORETICALLY took stall positon 16. |
By:
Garnet Bougoure (now that is a name!!) Think he took over at Paddy Prendergast's after Ron Hutchinson left for the Duke of Norfolk retainer. (big job in those days). Garnet came to Paddy's from Vincent O'Brien's!! O'Brien replaced Garnet with T P(at) Glennon who a few years later rode Sea Bird to win the Derby. Wheels within wheels!
|
By:
bazzar......of course u are right..... its not 9 feet wide......that wonky hasnt a clue......think he was talking about a horsebox not a starting stall......its the authority of the statement by him......emphatic he was.....but as always clueless......
|
By:
bazzar if you try a site called simtrack that we hopefully give you the info you need...
|
By:
booby , tie up your piebald , its running loose ffs....
|

Today is Toss Taaffes birthday, brother of Pat Taaffe and son of Grand National winning trainer Thomas Taaffe.
I always thought Toss was an unfortunate name for a jockey. |
By:
@ Blackrock re: Edmondson, champion apprentice I think, in early seventies, became sick with a bone disease and gave up as a jockey, I believe that he is till in the game somewhere. Don't know what he is doing though.
|
By:
yes edmondson was top app in the 70s , i think he might have held it jointly with someone ...or just my imagination playing up...
|
By:
Blackrock: Not sure at all about this but I thought Edmondson was an instructor at the apprentice school or at least in some such capacity in Newmarket.
Toss Taffe if memory serves me right won an Irish Grand National around the early 60's and i think he rode Royal Tan when he finished third to Devon Loch in the English Grand National. |
By:
***Before I get a rollicking sorry meant ESB in the English Grand National, a definite Freudian slip.
|
By:
S Smith and J Jarvis another combination i had many a good win on.
|
By:
J Curant finished 2nd on Polistina in the 1968 Portland, carrying 6-7. Presumably that's him as a 7lb claiming apprentice.
Also, a J Curant won the Moyglare in 1976 for trainer W R Annesley. Would they both be the John Curant of Kithairon fame? |
By:
w.r.annesley , thats a name from the past ged , think he trained on the curragh ...
