he was drawn very wide and that meant he was in the rear group all the way round.
difficult at goodwood to peg back the leaders once they get speed up going downhill.

Outpost the winner is drawn wider so your argument is flawed. Pat Dobbs sat motionless for almost 2f in the straight and rode it for a turn of foot inside the final furlong. If it had been an average mid-week meeting it would have looked like a non trier.

the winner was drawn wide but he forced it up the outside to get a better position in the race.   
I agree that dobbs sat motionless as they turned into the straight, and maybe the horse was going so well that dobbs thought he had more left than he had, but he did start pushing as they came inside the last 3 furlongs and I just think the horse stayed on well without really quickening.
