Was just on Sandown Park website and cannot believe the admission prices they are charging tonight. £37 for an adult is bad enough if you just want to go racing and cant stand Tom Jones but how they can justify charging kids between 5-17 £20 to get in? None of them have heard of Tom Jones to start with! Average family of 2 adults and 2 children £114 to get in the gate? Total disgrace
Wee eck in all seriousness there are currently only 43 horses on the entire card at Sandown tonight and no race above a Class 4....£37? But the £20 for kids is worse in my opinion, i've already given the family price but another example say your a teenager living locally and want to go racing with a few friends tonight its going to cost you all £20 each to get in and you can guarantee none of them have a Tom Jones song on their ipod...nice touch by Sandown to say student discounts do not apply on music nights

I emailed Andrew Cooper, told him he was out of touch, his reply back was that basically the music nights crossed subsidised other events and helped to increase prize money at other meetings throughout the year, all business's operate an element of cross subsidy I guess

A couple of years ago went to Musselburgh had to pay extra to get in as

Well you look at the pioneers of the concerts i.e Newmarket and their Friday nights when they first started, they would sell out for at least say 3 of their 7 acts....... now this year they have only sold out for one of their acts, then it £5 admission in the cheap ring and probably £15 in the Grandstand ok was sevral years ago but the business model worked well, then they think we can charge what we like now and people will still turn up.........

Correct Roo...... it will be usesless, you should be saying a million people there and nobody having a bet, but by the very fact that Sandown were still emailing people at 8am this morning in a desperate attempt to get people to go...... there will be nobody there and therefore nobody having a bet

i remember one off the first nights at newmarket it could have even been the first one,it was freddie and the dreamers around 1994 i am pretty sure you just paid normal admission prices back then.

Joking Apart, racecourses will price themselves out eventually, if the bookies had the bottle to boycott just 1 decent meeting.the racecourses would 5hit themselves and listen...Likewise if punters done the same.

I love Sandown but that is just absurd to charge those prices. I have seen Tom Jones before in Vegas and he puts on a good show fair enough but for the racegoers that are not interested in the gig they just won't go at that price.
Plus 6 quid for a salt beef sandwich but that's another story. With travelling and all the rest of it you have to allow about £80 for expenses, it's just far too much for a lot of people.

agree about the books not turning up for one of these, but i am sure you will agree there are two chances ,slim and no chance and as they say slim has just left the building.

I'm going tonight ;as a member these stupid prices don't affect me Except i wont be taking my student son and so the course will lose a) a student admission b) supper for 2 in the bistro and c) a couple of pints......rest assured the place will be empty until about 7pm when the trains will disgorge hundreds if not thousands.Last year I left after the last race and was the only person driving out of the gates.I hate these music evenings.

Correct Posy, another reason why it's no good for the books, most of the clientle leave work late or have drinks in town before heading over for the concert, they treat it like a concert in effect......

Jimnast - you are correct, Newmarket used to charge the same price for all their meetings including those with a concert at the outset, the pricing disparity has got bigger and bigger ever since

Jimnast, I saw him at the MGM Grand, some old Doris, she must have been about 82 threw her granny pants at him. It was a truly disturbing scene for me let alone Sir Tom

I did see Blondie at The July course and about 12,000 stayed for the gig and I thoroughly enjoyed it, she really rocked the place. Entrance was nowhere near 37 sovs though.

Did Sandown not have a meeting last year with TJ singing at the end? If I remember correctly, they had a huge crowd. It's all well and good us racing purists complaining about high prices when there is a popular act on afterwards (and TJ still packs them in) but when I went to the Brigadier Gerard night, which had probably the best evening's racing in the UK, the place was virtually empty. Yes this evening at Sandown is very pricey if you don't want to stay for the show but how would you police a dual ticketing system?

yes he was there last year but the crowds didn't turn up until over half way through the card...as i said earlier i seemed to be the only person driving out of the More lane exit after the racing. I too thought Brigadier evening would be better attended however i seem to remember the weather wasn't too warm...think it was a lovely warm evening last year with a big crowd.
Anyway off now to lose some money

I went to the Brigadier Gerard meeting, it was fairly busy but for the standard of racing it should have been mobbed I agree. I have to say it though it was the most enjoyable meeting I have been to for a good while.

tbf, a lot of those early July Course concerts (20 odd years ago) when the prices stayed the same generally had tribute-type acts such as Bootleg Beatles, Blues Brothers, Bjorn Again, etc.
It was only when they started going after "big names" that the prices were really hiked up - and then pretty much stayed that way whether it was a really big name or not.

Not only are they punishing a racegoer actually interested in the sport by their ticket price hike, but if the stage is obstructively placed where it usually is, the racegoers' view of the actual event itself will also be diminished.

I went this meeting last year, it completely obliterated 2f in the home straight with the stage, never ever again.

Was in New York, early nineties, ad. in paper for Aqueduct race meeting. Between races Chaka Khan and Tony Bennett singing. Mind you, admission a bit steep at $5! What is wrong with this country?

The Aussies have got the sport nailed, off course TAB monopoly but bookmakers on course, absolutely perfect set up now given the internet alternatives.
I lived in Sydney and 20 years ago bog standard greyhound races at Wentworth Park was a grand to the winner.
My local racetrack Rosehill offered prize money then that puts us to shame even now all those years later.

What will the bookmakers badge be next year for such music events. Epsom must have caught a cold this year with there pricing on the early music nights. £40 in. I see for the Alfie Boe one can get entry tickets for just £16 if you are savvy enough to know where to get them from. Desperation already?

Am back from Sandown;cold and wet. It was practically empty behind the stands at the parade ring throughout the evening and only a few people there for the first few races.Although it filled up and people were still arriving after the last race as i was leaving it didn't seem anywhere near as full as this time last year.Have to say people watching is quite good fun....talk about 50/60 year old mutton trying to dress like lamb and in general they looked cold and miserable .Cost to get into the premier enclosure a whopping £43 .Looks like they're starting to panic about sales for someone called Alfie Bowe next week as they were advertising reduced price packages.

i was told after 3 races last night that it was unworkable in parts of the ring, dont know if it picked up but at the prices the books have to pay it would have needed to,perhaps as reculver suggested in his 1526 post something needs to happen,do we ever wonder where is it going to end ?

regarding brigadier gerard night ,i go each year for a night out, i find the crowd just right ,lets just hope the racecourse doesnt start messing about with that fixture.

it's not compulsory for bookmakers to turn up and as the badge fee next year is connected to the attendance figures many probably won't.
was tom jones worth the money ?
