Tim Sprake is another jockey I wondered what had happened to after his accident.
I'm not just saying it to be sentimental but I always thought he was decent but underrated and remember seeing him in an interview part way into his recovery and he talked about coming back and whilst I was full of admiration for his fighting spirit and it probably helped him in a big way to have a positive attitude, I remember thinking no way is that going to happen. |

Did he not ride for the Major?

Intelligence has always been one of Declan Murphy's defining characteristics, and it was displayed again yesterday when the jockey, having decided that he had "nothing left to prove", announced his retirement from the saddle to join the nascent satellite Racing Channel. Jibereen, Murphy's winning ride at Chepstow last month on his return from a near-fatal injury, will now also enter the record books as the last of his career.

The fine details of Murphy's comeback ride on Jibereen were controversially put under scrutiny by the Jockey Club, but the rider denied the official interest had in any way prompted his decision. "That had absolutely nothing to with it," he said. "It was right for racing that they looked into the matter."
The betting patterns before the Chepstow race were investigated by the Jockey Club, amid allegations of skullduggery concerning not only the tactics employed by the other jockeys but also the ballot for the jockeys' mounts beforehand. It transpired that Murphy had partnered Jibereen in work a couple of days prior to the race. Yesterday, however, a Jockey Club statement said that investigations had found no breach of any regulations and that no inquiry is to be held. |

From memory, Brendan Powell was second and was the only one of the "persuers" to use his whip - Jibreen had already crossed the line by then though.
|
|
By:
Brendan Powell was second last:
Dwelt, held up on inside, ridden halfway, soon weakened It was Carl Llewllyn who came second: Started slowly, held up, headway 3f out, ridden 2f out, ran on well to go 2nd inside final furlong, not quicken near finish A masterful front-running ride from Barney Curley's favourite jockey on the winner: Made all, soon 3 lengths clear, quickened 2f out, driven out |
