Luke Nolen says his ride on Black Caviar at Royal Ascot was far from his best and in fact he considers it one of his worst.
The 32-year-old this morning faced a sizeable media conference at Mornington racecourse, south of Melbourne, and stressed he was disappointed that his now infamous ride was on the world stage.
But he said that the champion mare was feeling pain during the 1200-metre race.
Nolen was criticised by the English media just hours after Black Caviar's narrow win when it appeared that he dropped his hands on Black Caviar 50 metres from the line, nearly causing Australia's greatest sprinter to endure her first defeat.
"I think those four or five strides will stay with me for a while, but I'm getting over it and I think that when it got urgent again she put her lovely big head out and won," Nolen said.
"In the past I've let her down at that same point but this time she came back to me quickly.
"It shocked me because especially in every straight race she competes in she's like a bull at a gate to get it over with, but this time it was different.
"I knew then she wasn't right. It wasn't my best ride - it was probably one of my worst - but I can't get time back. She won and that's the most important thing."
Nolen explained that his reluctance to speak to the media on his arrival back in Australia was that he wished to ride at Caulfield and focus on those rides and to overcome a slight case of jetlag.
"It's sad that the centre of attention is my ride when the attention should be on Black Caviar and her 22nd win at Royal Ascot," he said.
However Nolen would not be drawn on Black Caviar's future, whether the mare be retired or prepared for the spring carnival.
"Those decisions are always left to Peter Moody, but I know one thing, that Peter puts the horse first ahead of anything else and I know he's very protective of her 22-win streak," he said.
In a lighter moment, Nolen said that at the trophy presentations with the Queen he nearly dropped his hands again.
"The Queen put out her hand and I didn't know what to do. I thought it was etiquette not to touch her but I thought 'She's put her hand out so I'll shake it'," he said.
"Let's be honest, I'm a boy from Manangatang, was brought up in Dalby in Queensland, so really I didn't know all of the right things to do. But I just remember a prime minister (Paul Keating), I think, touching her when he shouldn't have.
"But she was genuinely interested in the mare, she knew a lot about her and when Peter invited her to pat Black Caviar she was happy enough to do it."
Nolen will ride on Saturday at Caulfield but hoped that the famous five strides on Black Caviar would be forgotten in time and people would reflect on the horse's win and not his ride

LOL, more feeble excuses, what next, the sun was in her eyes? Admit it, your horse got found out against better rivals and a more testing course. But no, you won't admit it as that would depreciate her value as a dam. So off back to Oz you go with your tail between your legs where she will miraculously win again racing against more dross.
