And there is my point i've been drumming all day yesterday. The horse was never trained up a hill, she didn't know what hit her when she met the rising ground hence the tearing of the muscles. Another good reason for the owners to send her to Ballydoyle.
Report AFL June 24, 2012 12:19 PM BST
UNBEATEN Black Caviar was on Sunday night diagnosed with two muscle tears and severe bruising to her hind quarters following her famous win in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Veterinarians told trainer Peter Moody "she would have definitely felt it during the run".

"She's had something like this before," Moody said, adding he did not know when she might have picked up the injuries.

"She's entering quarantine today, we're sending her home, but we'll be able to have the injuries treated whilst she's in quarantine."

Vets inspected the unbeaten mare at her Newmarket stable base and located the muscle injury and bruising.

The physical issues could explain why her customary acceleration and speed were missing during the Diamond Jubilee Stakes.

The "Wonder From Down Under" was still poised to register another comfortable win when jockey Luke Nolen controversially dropped his hands near the line, almost costing the mare her unbeaten record.

Given the vagaries of travel, Nolen's riding blunder and the injuries the mare sustained during the race, the Diamond Jubilee Stakes may now go down as one of her greatest of her 22 wins.

Moody said Black Caviar ate up after her Royal Ascot win but admitted the mare was "very flat and tired" this morning.

Moody said no decision on Black Caviar's racing future would be made until the mare had returned to Australia, recovered from her injuries and enjoyed a deserved spell.

Moody is still hopeful Black Caviar will race in Melbourne during the spring carnival.

Caviar, the 1/6 ($1.16) favourite scrambled in by only a head from Moonlight Cloud $6, with Restiadargent (40/1) a neck away third.

Soul, the former Sydney sprinter who would not have got near Black Caviar in Australia, finished fourth, only about a length from the great mare.

Black Caviar certainly wasn't at her supreme best but she was still able to win the 12th Group 1 win of her career, taking her prizemoney to more than $6.5 million.

Tore muscles don't make me laugh

This was don'e over 3 mile carrying 12 stone giving nearly 2 stone to the winner

http://www.bloodlines.net/TB/Bios2/Arkle.htm

It now seemed a mere formality that Arkle would win a fourth Cheltenham Gold Cup. There was just Kempton Park’s King George VI Chase to overcome – a conditions race he had won the year before – in which he only had to concede 21 lb. to his six opponents. But almost from the start Pat Taaffe sensed something was wrong. Arkle was jumping to the left on a right handed track (in hindsight he had done the same over the last few fences at Ascot ). It was clear that Arkle, if not struggling, was not the Arkle we knew. Invisible from the stands, Arkle had clipped the guard rail at the second fence with his off-fore, splitting the pedal bone. But a cracked pedal bone was certainly not going to stop him now.

Woodland Venture, the most likely danger, and an old adversary, Dormant, whom Arkle had distanced in the same race the previous year, both had a go at him. But Arkle never surrendered his lead easily, and he still led at the end of the first circuit. At the first fence in the back straight – and Kempton’s fences were not to be trifled with – Arkle went straight through it; in much the same way he had done at Cheltenham when winning his third Gold Cup. A gasp from the crowd; followed by a sigh as his remarkable balance rescued him. Biddlecombe drove Woodland Venture into the lead, but Arkle was having none of it, and by the next fence he was back in front.

By the second last, when Arkle would have normally taken leave of his field, Woodland Venture was still hanging on, and he challenged for the lead again. Almost upsides of Arkle as they took off, Woodland Venture crashed to the ground, leaving Arkle alone. Only one fence left and he would be home.

But creeping out of the depth of winter mist was Dormant, who under normal circumstances would not have caught Arkle if he had run to the end of the world. Dormant now appeared to be closing on Arkle at a phenomenal rate. The crowd was willing Arkle on – completely unaware of the excruciating pain that was stabbing into his off fore every time it touched the ground.

At the last fence Dormant was six lengths in arrears and even in receipt of 21 lb. his task looked formidable. But on the run-in the race took a dramatic change. Arkle’s stride faltered and shortened as Dormant relentlessly cut down his lead. It was only twenty yards from the winning post that Dormant finally caught him, but so slow was Arkle going now (he had almost slowed to a trot as he passed the winning post) that Dormant had a length to spare.

As Pat Taaffe – who worshipped the only perfect horse he had ever sat on – was led in, the anguished expression on his face told the whole story: Arkle had broken down. It was an anguish shared by all who had followed this great horse.

His injury was serious enough: the pedal bone was split over two inches. One must wonder at the pain he must have experienced racing over three miles – never attempting to pull-up, but fighting to the bitter end. Little wonder the public took him to their hearts.

So don't make muscle tears an excuse for beating moderate sprinters  Mischief

I`am sure to most racing people that the mare did not run up to her best form yesterday.
Pushed out to the line, she would have won by about 1L, so the fact that she was injured during the race, she did well to win at all.

Ffs, how much are these vets on? £400 an hour?

I 'm just a silly cnt, but, if you look back, you'll see I posted that BC looked knackered to me.

I can sense when a horse ain't right.
That race in the cold and wet with a stiff climb and some decent, close competition, was a bit to much for this good winner.

Perhaps that's why all the connections looked ashen and upset ( except the jockey, who looked ashen but seemed to be blushing at the same time).
I guess they could see that something had gone wrong. Didn't even look good before the race.

Anyway, I'm no pom and I used to live in Australia, so, well done for having a go and winning, lads!Happy

That animal looks a bit heavy and steroidish for my liking. I can't see thew breeding chances being improved by this event.
A pity, because at least you had a go.

I'd love to see Fanshawe's break on level terms, but I don't think it's ever going to happen.
The other Australian horse ran well. Godolphin were trying on that one, I reckon, and Frankie was trying to wind the young fella up before the race.

Btw, anybody want to save on vet fees, I'm open to offers, as I ain't a particularly good punter. Grin

I think he was frightened she'd break down. It would have been a terrible calamity.

Obviously, the French hadn't read the script.

If she recovers, I'd like to see her in a match against Fanshawe's. There again, you have to be able to trap properly.
Perhaps a flag start would do?

Murtagh wouldn't be far away, imo.

No point speculating. 'Tis all over now, and she's kept her record.

I think that the performance yesterday proved to me that, injury aside Black Caviar is a good horse but not the superstar that everybody thought, yesterday she didnt beat alot and the time of the race after proved the performance to be just ordinary. For me to earn the name superstar she should have won yesterday with her head in her chest or with the minimum of fuss which she didnt. The races that she has competed in in Australia are clearly pretty low grade in comparison to British races.
